A JLWF member just sent us these photos of a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Diesel Prototype that he spotted yesterday being tested with other JLU prototypes. He managed to get under the vehicle to confirm, as you will notice the DEF tank in these photos.

As we learned from the FCA dealer meeting this week, the 3.0L diesel is scheduled for late 2019 model year availability.

No word yet on the specifications, but the 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee makes 240 HP / 420 LB-FT!

I want this, even if I can only have an automatic. A new Jeep JLUR with some GUTS!

The DEF tank looks to be 2nd gen & tucked up better than the early ones we saw.

Also, one of the better looks at the suspension we've seen.

Also also, to me it appears there might be room for a small aux fuel tank opposite the driveline, if one were so motivated...

Does anybody know if a manual transmission will be offered with the diesel?

Will not be offered. Word is that there is no manual that can handle the torque. Tremec makes them, but they either are super giant, heavy truck transmissions, or are muscle car transmissions with no ability to drive a transfer case. Even with the export JKs with the 2.8 VMI diesel, they detuned the torque on the manual versions. No joy.

Hmmm, wondering if there will be paddle shifters on the diesel with the 8HP75 transmission... (or any of the engines with the 8sp auto)

Why not? Could be really great both on and off road. They have them in the GC currently.

Edit:

On the other hand, manual mode on the floor shifter is good too, it's not like we'll take these out for track days and need both hands on the wheel at all times...

And a return of the odd-man-out Diff/Axle. WTF !?! Haven't seen that in over a year too.

It's 6 bolt lower half vs Dana 5 bolt. Looks kinda like the Chrysler 8.25 or more like 9.25 due to flat left side in the rear however up front it's much flatter / more oblong.

Could be the new Dana, but the first glimpse of this was before their new Toledo plant making JL axles was up and running IIRC. The old D28 was a 12 bolt, but very small. There's another AM variant I can't remember that was a similar layout and 12 bolt.

Hopefully it's something near as strong and capable (pay/tow) as a D60 but as light as a D44.

Transfer case seems to stil be the NV241 (likely OR), but with a few more bolt holes in addition to the triad, and a nice black colour.

Was thinking that might get a tweak with the added torque in the system from the diesel, but if it did it wasn't drastic looking,

Interesting that the stabilizer now has a dedicated mount mid-axle vs mounting to the bottom of the RH trackbar/coil bracket. What's up with the bracketry on the backside of the axle though, between the stabilizer and the LCA mount? I hope that's not an axle-disconnect housing...

Also note that the t'case skid is a made from just bars/tubing vs a plate design like the JK's.

Could be. It actually reminds me of the old Ram Power Wagon skid plate/rail design. I would think a stamped plate would be lighter/cheaper to use though, while providing more protection.
