Ultimately that is what I will probably do but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try for a sick deal on a 18.
Same boat as you. I think I am going to try to get in on the next group buy with Mark unless the 18 that I am looking at comes back with a sizable discount.

Criswell is a little too far for me. I do have an office down there, but I don't like to mix business travel with anything personal.

This is my first time buying a new Wrangler. I had a used 91 for quite some time. But in my experience with buying other make new cars (e.g., Chevy), I found that buying late in the model year one found huge discounts as they want to unload inventory for the new model year.

BUT it seems to me FCA sells every Wrangler they can make (even the previous generation!). So my question is, is there any reason at all to look for a 2019 vs a 2020? The truth is, I'm paying cash, and while I don't want to be ripped off, is there a compelling $$ reason to buy a year old model year Wrangler now?

There are still 18’s out there but what I found is FCA doesn’t offer many incentives. Honestly your best bet may be ordering a 2020 from a dealer who offers 5-8% under invoice.

I was able to negotiate about 14% off MSRP on a new 19 but it took some work.

The discounts are from the dealers themselves. Dealers buy the vehicles on credit, so the longer it sits on the lot the more they pay. Some will offer the vehicles at up to 20% off MSRP (not invoice) to get the car off the lot. A lot of the vehicles that are leftover have non-ideal option combinations (like a stripped sahara, or a base Rubicon with only leather, automatic transmission and adaptive cruise control).

But unless you are getting a good discount, and the exact options you want, it's best to special order a 2020 through one of the dealers listed in here who offer nice discounts off invoice. Would you rather spend 50k + 10% discount on a vehicle that has 8k in options you do t want or spend 45k + 8% discount on the exact vehicle you want.
