2018 JLU Brake Failure

Here is the scenario
- Jeep was off. Jeep in 1st gear, parking brake is set.
- Jeep parked on my driveway, which is about a 5% incline
- pushed in clutch, pushed in brake pedal, released parking break
- Jeep immediately went backwards down driveway, until I pulled up the hand brake.
- Jeep was off the entire time. Not started.

When I turned the jeep on, the foot brake would not release.

This is a 2018 JLU that I just purchased new from dealer inventory last weekend. Is this a one off fluke? Has anyone seen this problem before?

I've never seen... I also have an 18 in manual... hasn't happened to me. Hopefully it's back at the dealer?

I will try to recreate the situation tomorrow, same time. If it happens again, the dealer will be getting a visit!

You tried to use the brake while it was off? Hard to do.

Yea, it's REALLY tough to use brakes on modern cars when they're off. You really gotta put all your weight behind it. The brake not releasing afterwards is weird, though.

I'm unclear on what "foot brake would not release" means?

The brakes were locked up? The pedal was? Returned to original position? Pedal was depressed and stayed there?

There's a lot of interpretation in foot brake not releasing. And if so, how did you finally move the vehicle?

When the car is off and the hand brake is applied, try pumping the brake pedal to see if it firms up.

Perhaps not obvious, but better stated than not: if there’s any sign of brake issue, just remember to tow it to the dealer, and not risk driving it.

You have to start the vehicle or it would be difficult to apply the brakes.

The issue did not repro this morning. I followed the same steps. Everything worked fine.
- whether the vehicle is on or off, the brake pedal should work. Normally, it works fine when I start the jeep, which is before the jeep is turned on/powered up/booted up..
- on the "foot brake would not release" the system was behaving as it does when it holds the brake for an uphill start. It was weird. I pumped the brake, and it seemed to "reset"

I just wrote a long reply to the OP but the more I wrote the more it felt like we are being trolled....so I stopped.

If your Jeep is off, there is only enough hydrolic pressure to press the brakes once. From then on, they are manual brakes. They'll work, but you really have to press them.

I've got 20k and 19 months on my JLUR/manual. I've also got a steep driveway and am frequently on boat ramps. I've never had any issue. I've never had that kind of issue in 11 years/132k miles on my JK, either.

That doesn't mean yours hasn't developed a problem or has a defect. Brake systems, however, are pretty simple. If there's a problem it should be repeatable.

i would make a trip to the dealer just in case even if it seems fine now. at least its on record that something happened and it was inspected.

Check your brake lines. Although since it worked the next day none are probably broken.

Reminds me of being on a trail and a stick snags a brake line. Lose your brake pedal pressure pretty quick.
