2018 JK Rubicon vs. JL Sport S

I would always go for a JL over a JK no matter what trim package but I would stay away from the 2018 JL.

Get the JL, put some 33 or 35" tires on it and you'll be just fine.

I made the same decision a couple of years ago.
I was looking at a used 2018 JL vs. a used JK Rubicon, maybe 2017. I asked questions and was told that the JL was a much better vehicle and I should go that way so I did. I own the JL specifically to do trails but it gets a lot of highway miles to and from the trails. The JL has taken me everywhere I've tried to drive it, with no problems. I put Rubicon springs, shocks and tires on it. I've decided that there is a relatively small margin between what a JL Sport will do vs. what a JL Rubicon will do. I've put almost 30,000 miles on the 2018 JL, it runs well and I've had no problems with it.
