From old experience with turbo charged engines in SAABs that was tuned it worked using lower octane rating when it is cold and/or moist. Then it don't knock. Another trick was water injection in manifold as that both lowered temperature and added moisture. And allowed either more power or run on low octane.
In hot weather or pushing the engine a lot a higher octane was needed to avoid knocking and reduced power.
Not easy to hear some knocking but it was visible on turbo boost pressure that is reduced when knocking occurs.

Had no difference in mpg but very clear more power in summer using high octane. Winter no difference.
Well. Mpg did get worse in summer due to a heavy right foot..........

So I will run my jeep on 87 during winter months and 91 in summer
