Howdy!

I have a 2018 Jeep JL with the 2.0 4cyl turbo engine. I recently got an oil change (5300 miles) and I noticed they used 5W-20 instead of 5w-30.

The book recommended 5W-30, contacting the Jeep wave people they said 5W-30, but if the dealer said 5w-20 was alright than they trust their trained people.

The dealer also referenced a small “catch all” box that said approved oil weights and that was in that area.

Should I be concerned? Love the turbo, got a killer deal new, but off Calendar year.

Not the biggest deal but for peace of mind you may want to change oil a little sooner.

While you’re under the hood check to ensure they put five quarts in, not six.

I should probably do that. I just had oil changed....
On these JL’s will it show significantly above the full line if they exceeded.
I just bought
Mine last week so I’m still learning.

You should be fine. It's the dealers that are putting in too much oil, not the factory.

Take it back and ask them to put the correct grade of oil in. It's on the oil fill cap, not sure how they missed it. The owner's manual states the following, and I've bolded for emphasis:

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade) — 2.0L Engine
Mopar SAE 5W-30 engine oil
approved to FCA Material
Standard MS-13340 such as Pennzoil, Shell Helix or equivalent
is recommended for all operating temperatures. This
engine oil improves low temperature starting and vehicle
fuel economy.

The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended
engine oil viscosity for your engine. For information on
engine oil filler cap location, refer to the “Engine Compartment”
illustration in this section.

Lubricants which do not have both the engine oil certification
mark and the correct SAE viscosity grade number
should not be used.

5W-20 simply should not have been used. Period. Have them fix it.

Folks here may say it won't matter, but it could. Other manufacturers of 2.0L, direct-injected turbocharged engines also require 5W-30 (my Forester XT is one) and it is because direct injected engines can end up diluting their oil with fuel, which drops the effective viscosity and thins it out. The -30 weight helps counteract that. Use the correct oil.

Note that Jeep Wave and Jeep Cares people are not trained to answer these types of questions. The people who wrote your owner's manual are. Follow it.

Pretty clear to me - they used the wrong grade...time for a redo. As far as trusting their trained people - you mean that 18 year old kid who knows nothing about engines? Oil changed are relegated to the least experienced.

I very happily forfeited the free jeep wave oil changes, by getting my own oil and Mopar filter to do it myself. If you can't rely on a dim wit to simply put in the correct quantity of the correct oil, than why also allow them to hop in and drive your vehicle.

The potential risks of wrong oil and/or quantity of it, the chance of a stripped drain plug or filter housing, and scratches/oil prints around the front end or driver's seat area are not, in my mind at least, worth saving a lousy $200 courtesy of the jeep wave program.

Years ago, I worked at the highest overall volume Toyota dealer in the tri-state area. The stories I could tell...
Add to that, the fact that talent and pride of workmanship is eroding as the years pass.

Just my 2 cents, before taxes of course.
