So had some bad luck the other day while on my way to place my order for a 22 wrangler. Basically someone ran a red light and hit my car and totaled it which put me in a bad spot since I was on my way to order a 22. Now I dont have a car and probably cant wait for a 22 to be built but the dealership I was ordering from actually has a rubicon recon edition thats close to my specs I wanted but I am pretty sure all recon editions have the 2.0 in it. So my question is for the people who own one or have ridden in one how does it feel? I had 2018 Rubicon in the 3.6 and I am a little afraid the 2.0 is going to feel very under powered. Thanks

2.0 all the way. There are many threads about this topic and it has been beaten to death.

After test driving a JLUS with the 2.0 Turbo, I was sold on the engine before I placed an Order for my JLUR New Build. Plenty of pickup and throttle response was spot on. Absolutely no signs of sluggishness. You won't regret it.

That 2.0T engine has a LOT of pep. It'll surprise you how quick it makes a Wrangler. I drove both a 3.6 and the 2.0 before ordering and to me it was the 2.0 hands down.

I test drove dozens of Jeeps to run direct comparisons between the 2.0 and 3.6 engines. The 2.0 has a low and mid range torque advantage over the 3.6, which has to rev higher to wake up and accelerate at the same rate. Also, many here believe that the published output specs of the 2.0 are underrated and multiple dyno graphs indicate that it doesn't suffer from as much drive train parasitic loss as the 3.6 engine. Every 2.0 I drove felt overall fun to drive and it's pep made the Jeep feel lighter than it is. Having to keep the revs higher on the 3.6 made it feel like it had to work harder and didn't feel as inspiring.

Here's my 2.0...

My 2.0 feels like a caged Tasmanian Devil ready to bust outta its cage. It's a lot of fun to drive and much more "peppy" than I anticipated.

I know the 392 guys are understandably giggling at me. But like I said before, if I had a 392 I'd be in a world of trouble and hurt and probably in jail.

In my JLR (2dr), once the turbos kick in, the 2.0 with the 8 speed auto has more than enough torque to quickly crank through the gears up to maybe 70 mph. So, it's great in town, off road, and on most highways, great gas mileage by comparison to my old pick-ups.

It will easily get up around 90 mph; but, then stability on curves in a short wheelbase, high center of gravity, Jeep becomes the issue. Also above maybe 75 mph, it seems to start guzzling gas trying to make those speeds.

So, it's a plenty quick engine; but, maybe not fast in the same way as some of the faster road cars. My only concern is that turbos generally develop more internal stress and don't last quite as long as naturally aspirated engines; but, it seems tight and should last at least 75 to 80 thousand miles and, by that time, I'll be looking to swap to another engine anyway.

Having had both engines in Rubicon trims 2020 and 2021 I can say the 2.0t is superior in almost all aspects of power and performance. The only drawback (which is subjective) is the weak engine sound that reminds me of a 90s vintage Honda Civic.

Now don’t get me wrong I am a BIG fan of the 3.6 as it served me well in my 2013 JKU for well over 125K mile of flawless running. Thats why I opted for it in my 2020 Rubicon. Unfortunately my 2020 had issues and had to be replaced. Since I did not want the 3.6 with eTorque on my 2021 (only option when I ordered) I had to opt for my 2021 being a 2.0. I have not been disappointed with settling for it even with the 4cly engine tone.

My 2021 2.0T Rubicon with 2” lift and 35” tires.

Sold a 3.6 for a 2020 2.0 JLUR. Absolutely love it. She’s loud on a cold start but man she hauls ass passing through the mountains with ease on 35’s. I’ve wheeled it all over Colorado and Moab as well.

I have 2.0 Rubicon 2 door and it’s hands down the most fun car I’ve ever driven. It’s peppy, with decent gas mileage and I honestly even prefer it quiet since I take conference calls in my car. Don’t have any plans of upgrading the exhaust for a louder exhaust note. Very happy with it.

Quick disclaimer: I haven’t driven the 2.0T, but the Recon edition includes the e-torque mild hybrid system, so I gotta think some of the pep you’re feeling (at low rpm, where an 8 speed auto will naturally want to land at each shift), is the e-torque assist. I couldn’t believe how fast and smooth my acceleration is in my 3.6 with e-torque. It’s seamless between gears and steady acceleration through it’s range….. if it wasn’t for the growl of the engine, you would almost think your driving an electric vehicle….
