Going downhill in 4L 1000rpm and holding. Well controlled. Very slow for a few seconds. Steep grade. 1-3mph. Rocky.

Its like the brakes release. RPMs climb rapidly. Have to apply brakes. Cycle repeats.
Not a smooth typical controlled RPM climb going downhill in any other 4x4.

Update. Tested on a steep downhill. Not as steep or rocky. Couldnt duplicate.
.
Side note. God the 4x4L shifting sucks. Tractor transmissions shift better. Chinese 4 wheelers shift better. Quite possibly the worst engage/disengagement on any 4x4 ever designed.
Let me know if you can think of one that shifts worse.

Is it maybe ABS detecting slip?

Automatic?

FWIW, the transfer case loosens up with use. Like, a lot.

Auto.
Just went around and rerouted the cable, lubed the connectors and shifted in/out of 4H 4L about 50 times. Still the worst shifting tcase on earth. My dads 71 chevy shifted better...at least more predictably. Its 2019, it should be like butter after having decades to test. Its like they disnt even test the damn thing.

Might want to have it looked at. After three or four times, mine got butter smooth. I can get in and out of 4H with no effort. 4L is also not hard, other than finding the sweet spot where the teeth line up.

The first couple times going into 4l was stiff. Now, it is butter smooth. I try and be just barely rolling when I shift into 4l.

Mine takes some effort but it isn't that bad. Just let the vehicle roll a little(like a few inches) and the shift happens much easier than when it's fully stopped. For this reason, I always shift to 4L before I get into the steep stuff.
Also, the transmission shifted to 8th gear at 10MPH when in 4Low. So , I always keep it in manual mode when in 4 L, much better control.
