Update 7/23/23: New defect, minor. Sealant of LED housing on rear left has failed. Obvious moisture intrusion and retention. Will ask nearest trusted dealership to evaluate on next oil change.
If you need support from our team while your Jeep is in for service, please let us know.

Update 12/2:

Jeep Wrangler JL Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System, Service Charging System, Cabin Cooling or Heating, CHOC, P0E15, B9A (23V-787) IMG_7723

Are you freaking kidding me?

Per latest update on Mopar.com, my VIN is on the list of affected models for recall B9A. The guidance remains unchanged:

Customers are advised to refrain from recharging these vehicles and not to park them inside of buildings or structures, or near other vehicles until the vehicle has the final repair completed.

Jeep Wrangler JL Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System, Service Charging System, Cabin Cooling or Heating, CHOC, P0E15, B9A (23V-787) 1701495361060

Other updates:

Replacement axle, rear taillight have both arrived at nearest trusted dealership, and are awaiting availability of a FCA loaner via Enterprise. Once thatā€™s arranged, Iā€™ll have the Jeep flashed to see if Iā€™m one of the bad batteries.

I cannot stress this enough. Do not buy any 4xe product. Get a regular gas Wrangler.

Ha. And that's just the first batch. That recall is going to cover every single 4XE built. It'll probably be very similar to the pacifica battery recall. To be fair buying the first model year of a brand new power train is going to be rocky to say the least.

Exactly. I knew inflation was coming and bought early. Also didnā€™t predict the expansion/extension of the tax credit program. Typically never buy anything in the first model year.

yep, first model year of any vehicle usually has issues. I special ordered a 2015 Mustang, turned out to but a huge POS. I sold it with only 3k miles.

As for my Wrangler 4xe, only issues that I have had so far is my radio display wonā€™t turn on sometimes. I have to pull the fuse to reset it. Then yesterday I got the POE15 code. I got an appointment for the battery heater in a week.

part of the problem is that all vehicles are getting more and more electronics. All of this fancy crap causes problems. My Mustang, F150 and GMC AT4 all had issues with the electronics. My F150 was by far the worst death trap I have seen. It would shut off even while driving on the highway. I would have to hold the start button while hitting the steering wheel to get it started again. I got good at it and could get it started while coasting at 75mph. The first time my wife saw me do this, she wasnā€™t having it lol! Traded that F150 in the very next day. She didnā€™t care how upside down it was lol.

Iā€™ve already purchased a replacement for the Jeep. Jeep is on a pitch count and effectively mothballed for the rest of the season.

The replacement is a Lexus GX 460. 2023 is the last model year.

Iā€™m still am a fan of the regular gas Wranglers. Might pick up a used one later.

I love love to see how long the carfax on this one is, yikes. These 4XE values are going to tank long term.

I checked the value of my 23 Rubicon and it has tanked. The used market is horrible for selling and trades.

TLDR: Until Jeep addresses FORM, CHOC, P0E15, B9A issues permanently, I DO NOT recommend buying ANY 4XE model. Especially in any location that sees cold weather. Lease one if you absolutely must have one.

Any my experience? Pretty damn common:

1643402350766.gif

Issue 1: auto-park at every stop.
ASSUMED RESOLVED

Full text warning (Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System) as well as the corresponding dash light (Red wrench with power symbol). Intermittent, very hard to replicate. Hasnā€™t reoccurred since software update performed 1/14/22.

Pedal response is off and feels stiffer than usual, the vehicle will kick itself into park at a stop automatically - requiring driver to shift back into drive. It auto parks at Every. Single. Stop. Youā€™ll notice at the start of the video the drive indicator is blinking. It is also blinking on the physical shift lever, and will not go into (proper) drive without first resetting to park.

hereā€™s a short driving clip. Skip to 2:10 for the auto park issue.

Just did some more research and read through the following link. Yikes!

Ah, even better. Itā€™s a intermittent issue. Only able to reproduce it once (two times total) after the original problem.

Issue 2: ā€œService Charging Systemā€
NOT RESOLVED, MANAGEABLE

Error prevents any charging; both L1 and L2 chargers. (Software update performed 1/14, new ā€œcharging moduleā€ ordered 1/26, installed 1/28, reoccurred 3/21, reoccurred 8/17)

Seems to be an issue between Jeep's vehicle charging port and certain Level 2 charger brands/models. Once triggered, error will prevent recharging at all Level 2 and Level 1 chargers, and must be reset at a dealership. No known solution as of early 2023.

Current workaround - if this error fires off, immediately note the station the vehicle is plugged into, and try to remember the one previous before that. Once of those stations likely tripped the error. Avoid those stations and note the model/manufacturer. Until further notice, avoid any stations that match that model/manufacturer.

Issue 3: ā€œBattery Cooling System Failure , Pump B Over Speedā€
RESOLVED

910CAD69-9245-4BA0-B936-B9271DAAA7DE.jpeg

New set of problems.

A battery coolant system failure, and an out of tolerance secondary pump. (P1DBA-00, P2E46-00)

Issue due to low hybrid coolant in hybrid cooling system. Additional coolant added to reservoir. System was tested for leaks, none found, and codes were cleared.

Issue 4: ā€œCheck Engine Light, EVAP Leakā€
RESOLVED

New Issue. Check engine light came on again. Vehicle had been undergoing several tests to confirm a leak in the EVAP system. One week in the repair shop, and a star case ticket laterā€¦ the tech determined it was caused by a loose fuel cap. (What?)

Issue 5: ā€œElectric Mode Unavailable Cabin Cooling or Heatingā€, P0E15 LOCKED PERMANENT, LOCKED FORM
PROBABLY NOT RESOLVED. (FORM cleared after 80F weather)

EC3D0D6A-25D4-4346-93B5-1465D7680086.jpeg

P0e15-00 hv coolant heater.PNG

New Issue. ā€œElectric Mode Unavailable, Cabin Cooling or Heatingā€ error immediately after an oil change. Appears to kick in within first half mile of all electric driving. Does not go away when A/C and heat set to OFF.

Further evaluation of Cabin Cooling or Heating (CHOC) issue is not possible, as the vehicle has entered into the ā€œnormalā€ Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM) for the wintertime. Will revisit issue in spring time.

Using an off the shelf OBDII scanner, was able to confirm "Locked Permanent" status of HV Coolant Heater. This can be confirmed by the lack of any kw usage by the climate system. Will need to have the dealership look at this again at next vehicle drop-off.

Dealership confirmed the hybrid coolant heater is indeed bad (P0E-15), and will require replacement. After 22 days, dealership informs me that the replacement hybrid hv coolant heater is not pairing with the vehicle. STAR case was opened, and any additional hv coolant heaters would need to be ordered by the STAR team.

Customer Retention Team is now involved. (Way too late. Second time vehicle has been out of service for multiple weeks, for clearly a warranty issue.) Attempting to expedite part delivery and install.

There are two separate hybrid battery heaters on the same 4XE system. In my situation, both required replacement. (Part 68400740AD and 68443445AC). One of these two parts had an initial ETA of 3/10.

Iā€™m fed up. Stuck in fuel or oil refresh mode (FORM) again. Weather has been consistently around 50F. Oil life has an indicated 98% remaining. Obviously been refueling as Iā€™m driving. Just get a gas Jeep or buy something else.

FORM finally cleared. Weather above 80F for next five days.

Getting stuck in Fuel or Oil Refresh Mode (commonly abbreviated as FORM) is a common issue. Jeep views it as normal operating behavior. Officially, their guidance is as follows:

For the last three years, I have not been able to clear FORM in the winter months. This is consistent with the final paragraph of their guidance. We have relatively mild winters in my region, but YMMV.

Other plug-in hybrids may see decrease in usable EV range in winter, but as of 2023, Iā€™m not aware of any other manufacturer with a class action lawsuit regarding itā€™s winter behavior:

Issue 6: Death Wobble
RESOLVED

Weak steering damper. Vehicle has developed the fabled ā€œdeath wobbleā€, which somehow eluded my super reliable JK. When driving at speeds over 60mph, any bump or change in road condition causes a notable vibration throughout cabin, lasting anywhere from five to fifteen seconds.

Steering damper was replaced. This has resolved the death wobble issue, but will continue to keep an eye on it.

Issue 7: Rear LED moisture
MINOR, PART ARRIVED - AWAITING INSTALLATION

Update 7/23/23: New defect, minor. Sealant of LED housing on rear left has failed. Obvious moisture intrusion and retention. Will ask nearest trusted dealership to evaluate on next oil change.

Udate 8/16/23: Tech confirmed issue, and has ordered a replacement. No ETA due to current strike situation.

Update 12/2/23: Part arrived. Awaiting FCA approved Enterprise loaner.

img_6267-jpeg.jpg

Issue 8: Front Axle Noise, Replacement
MINOR, PART ARRIVED - AWAITING INSTALLATION

New issue. Jeep developed a notable clicking noise when turning at low speeds. Previously believed to be a ball joint or tie rod issue, tech now believe itā€™s related to the front axle assembly. New part ordered, no ETA due to current strike situation.

Update 12/2/23: Part arrived. Awaiting FCA approved Enterprise loaner.

Issue 9: Recall B9A (NHTSA 23V-787)
NOT RESOLVED, TBD

Are you freaking kidding me?

IMG_7723.jpeg

Updates:

2021

Update 9/7: RRTs 21-122, 21-123, 21-124, 21-126, and 21-127 applied. Recall Y-46 performed on 9/8. Part was inspected, replacement was deemed not necessary.

Update 9/15: Issue is still ongoing, recent RRTs 21-122, 21-123, 21-124, 21-126, and 21-127 did not resolve the issue. Intermittent and infrequent.

Update 9/19: First bit of night driving since the last repair. Dome light programming is not behaving as expected. Double checked to make sure rolling switches were in correct position (max setting on left, near max on right), noticed dome lights no longer illuminate when doors are open. Dealership suspects driverā€™s door wiring, but needs more time to complete diagnostics. Still have the auto park issue.

Update 11/22: Issue still not resolved. Havenā€™t been able to secure a loaner to allow vehicle to sit long term at dealership. Dealership doesnā€™t have loaners. Part of issue is local market, Jeep has authorized $55 for a loaner, but that is not enough in this area (DC/Baltimore). Holiday travel season - Iā€™m effectively out of town until New Years. Will revisit after that.

Update 12/21: New issue. ā€œService Charging Systemā€ prevents charging at any charging station. Will display two lights at end of dash mounted light bar, red light at charger port, and charger symbol in driverā€™s cluster. Tested and confirmed issue with both level 1 and level 2 chargers.

2022

Update 1/14: Software update from dealership has allowed vehicle to use chargers again. There does not appear to be numeric code for this update. ā€œFuel and Oil refreshā€ engaged, and may be stuck. Intermittent ā€œauto-parkā€ issue has not reoccurred. Software update and verification required less than a half day of work.

Update 1/16: Nope. Charging problem has returned after two days. Frustrating. Vehicle is just not reliable. Back to the dealership we goā€¦

Update 1/26: Got a status update from nearest trusted dealer. Their EV specialist confirmed the same error codes showed a fault with the charging system. Since software was previously upgraded, next step is to replace the onboard ā€œcharging moduleā€. Module is expected to arrive on Friday at the earliest, and they will give me another update once it arrives.

Update 1/28: Dealership has completed installation of new charging module. Charging issue still persists. Dealership is now opening a case with FCA/Stellantis.

Update 2/9: Got vehicle back from dealership. Charging issue appears to be resolved. Two items related to charging addressed: (1) IDCM ā€œcharging moduleā€ replaced. (2) Pin 42 on connector 2 replaced. Vehicle is still in fuel and oil refresh mode - will need to see if this clears on next fill up.

Update 3/21: Charging issue is back again. One off - hasnā€™t reoccurred since

Update 6/21: New set of problems.
A battery coolant system failure, and an out of tolerance secondary pump. (P1DBA-00, P2E46-00)

Update 6/28: Issue due to low hybrid coolant in hybrid cooling system. Additional coolant added to reservoir. System was tested for leaks, none found, and codes were cleared.

Update 8/16: New Issue. Check engine light came on again. Vehicle had been undergoing several tests to confirm a leak in the EVAP system. One week in the repair shop, and a star case ticket laterā€¦ the tech determined it was caused by a loose fuel cap. (What?)

Update 8/17: ā€œService Charging Systemā€ error has returned.

Update 11/7: New Issue. ā€œElectric Mode Unavailable, Cabin Cooling or Heatingā€ error immediately after an oil change. Appears to kick in within first half mile of all electric driving. Does not go away when A/C and heat set to OFF. Attached a copy of S2208000027. Highly recommend sharing this with your dealership / service tech.

Update 11/16: Further evaluation of Cabin Cooling or Heating (CHOC) issue is not possible, as the vehicle has entered into the ā€œnormalā€ Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM) for the wintertime. Because vehicle is now stuck in winter FORM (with a recent oil change two weeks ago), there is no record in vehicle computer of the CHOC issue, and thus, cannot be further evaluated. Will revisit in the springtime. New Issue: Weak steering damper. Vehicle has developed the fabled ā€œdeath wobbleā€, which somehow eluded my super reliable JK. When driving at speeds over 60mph, any bump or change in road condition causes a notable vibration throughout cabin, lasting anywhere from five to fifteen seconds.

Update 12/29: Using an off the shelf OBDII scanner, was able to confirm "Locked Permanent" status of HV Coolant Heater. This can be confirmed by the lack of any kw usage by the climate system. Will need to have the dealership look at this again at next vehicle drop-off. Still waiting on the steering damper. original ETA was 11/30, still have not gotten part.

2023

Update 1/11: Steering damper was replaced. This has resolved the death wobble issue, but will continue to keep an eye on it.

Update 1/26: Got a call from trusted dealership. They have confirmed the hybrid coolant heater is indeed bad, and will require replacement. Part ETA is early February.

Update 2/17: Day 22 of rental. Trusted dealership informs me that the replacement hybrid hv coolant heater is not pairing with the vehicle. STAR case is opened, and any additional hv coolant heaters would need to be ordered by the STAR team.

Update 2/28: Day 33 of rental.
Customer Retention Team is now involved. (Way too late. Second time vehicle has been out of service for multiple weeks, for clearly a warranty issue) Attempting to expedite part delivery and install.

Update 3/7: There are two separate hybrid battery heaters on the same 4XE system. In my situation, both required replacement. (Part 68400740AD and 68443445AC). One of these two parts had an initial ETA of 3/10.

Update 3/24: Iā€™m fed up. Stuck in fuel or oil refresh mode (FORM) again. Weather has been consistently around 50F. Oil life has an indicated 98% remaining. Obviously been refueling as Iā€™m driving. Just get a gas Jeep or buy something else.

Update 4/5: FORM finally cleared. Weather will be above 80F for next five days.

Update 7/23: New defect, minor. Sealant of LED housing on rear left has failed. Obvious moisture intrusion and retention.

Update 8/16: New defect, minor. Jeep developed a notable clicking noise when turning at low speeds. Previously believed to be a ball joint or tie rod issue, tech now believe itā€™s related to the front axle assembly. New part ordered, no ETA due to current strike situation.

Update 12/2: Are you freaking kidding me? Per latest update on Mopar.com, my VIN is on the list of affected models for recall B9A. Replacement axle, rear taillight have both arrived at nearest trusted dealership, and are awaiting availability of a FCA loaner via Enterprise. Update 12/19: Purchased replacement for the Jeep. Jeep is on a pitch count and effectively mothballed for the rest of the season. (The replacement is a Lexus GX 460. 2023 is the last model year.)

This is as they say, perfect opportunity to lemon law and get far far away. Even if they fix it, this ain't right, let them eat it.

But what is status since this is a few years old??

Surprise! Thereā€™s now two open recalls on my Jeep:

Jeep Wrangler JL Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System, Service Charging System, Cabin Cooling or Heating, CHOC, P0E15, B9A (23V-787) IMG_8630

The Jeep has been effectively mothballed for last few months. Maybe a good thing, since ā€œSuspect vehicles may not have a functional defrosting and defogging system under certain conditions.ā€ We had a few small snowstorms recently. Would have hated not having a working defroster. The GX is doing well. Logged 1200 miles on it, no complaints.

I guess the 91 octane gas minimum is annoying, because we donā€™t have that readily available, and I need to do a little mental math to blend 87 and 93 myself at every fill up.
