  1. What is this block of plastic?

It only comes with Wranglers with larger tires. The wimpy factory scissors jack won't lift the axle high enough to change the tire. Best bet is to throw out the plastic spacer along with the factory scissors jack.
  2. OEM tire iron question.

I like the foam insulation idea, but I never carry my tire tools in the floor compartment in the back. The first time you need to unload everything from the back of your Jeep onto a dark narrow road, or in the rain, or in an endless sea of mud, you won't carry them there either.
  3. How meticulous do you get when cleaning/detailing your jeep?

I wash my 2008 Rubicon 4-door every second year, whether it needs it or not. I got into that habit when I lived 15 miles out a dirt road in Homer Alaska. Wash it at home? Dirty before getting to town. Wash in town? Dirty before getting home. Plus, I am firmly convinced that the dirt protects the...
  4. Awful service experience

I might have missed it but did you go to the BBB? I don't think much of the BBB in general, but when I had a problem with a Jeep dealer I made a complaint (not a review!) to the BBB and the dealer just about shit himself. He said that he would make things right, just remove the complaint. I...
  5. Changing Tires, an easier way.

I never put tire changing gear in that cubby. If you get a flat you need to completely unload the Jeep to get to the jack. I keep all of that stuff under a seat.
  6. I got handbrake wrong all these years

I like your idea for slowing with the emergency brake without losing your steering. Going (slowly) down icy hills I always had to stop the braking long enough to steer in the past. I am going to try the parking brake trick next time.
  7. I got handbrake wrong all these years

Some of us who live in Alaska never use our parking brakes because we don't want water to freeze in the cable or drum and then destroy the brakes when we drive the next time. I have a 2008 Rubicon and a 2001 Suburban and neither one has ever had the parking brake engaged, and it never caused any...
  8. What options are there for carrying extra fuel on a 392 Rubicon

I just finished a long road trip with a load (not gas) up top. It turned my 2008 Rubicon Unlimited from a terrible handling vehicle into a real menace. I knew what I was getting into, but had no choice. One thing to watch out for with tanks containing liquid is the "free surface effect". This...
  9. Driving a new 392 on 90 octane fuel?

Thanks for the info, Left Field, that's exactly what I was looking for. I agree about the detune. Ever since I got my 4 door Rubicon in 2008 I have wished for an engine that could pass tractor trailers on the two lane highways in Baja and pass motor homes on the two lane highways in Canada and...
  10. Driving a new 392 on 90 octane fuel?

I have heard unconfirmed reports that the 392 doesn't have a knock sensor. If that is true, the octane would seem to be much more critical, because the engine couldn't automatically retard the timing like most other vehicles do. Most vehicles will just lose some power with lower octane, but I'm...
  11. Driving a new 392 on 90 octane fuel?

I have researched lists of "good" octane boosters and they are all full of misinformation and are just trying to get a cut from you going to Amazon from their site. Googling individual boosters yields a small number of believable results, but it boils down to there being no octane boosters that...
  12. Driving a new 392 on 90 octane fuel?

I have a new 392 and I have never owned a vehicle which required premium fuel before. I live in Alaska, and the only premium fuel in the state is 90 octane. My question is: do I absolutely need 91 octane, or will 90 octane do ok if I have a light foot? Is the difference more important during...
  13. What did you NOT KNOW about your Jeep until today?

Regarding the location of the jack and lug wrench: I never leave them under the back flap! If you are carrying any cargo at all, you will need to move it all just to get to your jack, not a good idea on the two lane highways that I drive on in Canada and Mexico. I keep them all under the...
  14. Must do customization

One thing that I would warn you about is adding a lot of weight to the front end with a steel bumper and big winch. I had to do a front end (only) lift, and it degraded the on-road handling in twisty mountain roads (it was never a sports car to start with). Skid plates never hurt, depending on...
  15. Anyone go Jeeping Alone?

I mostly drive off road in Baja, where tow trucks are few and far between, and cell service can be non-existent. I don't drive alone any farther than I would want to walk back out. I have never gotten stuck, but there are a lot of other things that can keep you from making it back out. I always...
  16. Elitist Jeep Owners and Builds - you do you and I do me.

I have to admit that I don't completely understand people who get Rubicons for driving to work or to the "mall" on ice and snow. I have a Rubicon Unlimited that I use in Baja. When I had it in Alaska for a while, I didn't like the old fashioned "locked up" 4 wheel drive. I preferred my Suburban...
  17. 2023 Waiting/Venting Room

    I ordered a 4 door 392 July 11 and haven't gotten a VIN yet.
  18. What's the longest trip you've ever taken on your Wrangler?

Drove from Anchorage to Cabo in my 2008 Unlimited Rubicon, mostly avoiding the big freeways on the west coast..
