It's an option for sure, but just one more thing to deal with, plus it will still rain in that large gap (granted better than a funnel effect).

At face value, it sounds like you will be well over the max by the time you add water, food, gear, passengers, etc. I'd recommend you get the trailer loaded up like you would for a trip and have the combined weight checked. It's not about if it can move the trailer, its about liability...
