You're absolutely right - disconnecting the ribbon cable inside (along with the antenna pigtails), in lieu of completely removing the daughtercard, would have the same effect. To the head unit, the modem is missing.

Aiye, I forgot to conduct that experiment :-( .. Once I had the dash open, I just went all the way. It’s definitely be worth a try - would save you all the steps of disassembling the uconnect unit.
