Love the low-profile and the sturdiness of the BASERack system. Took it out west for a 6 week exploration trip. Went on some pretty rough trails; it held up to pretty rough forces, especially side to side forces. But those were my primary overlanding needs (1) Low profile as I have a large...
Hey Gary,
To do that you will have to fabricate a custom adapter from the Backbone to the BaseRack platform....Not sure that is worth the hassle. Even with a BaseRack platform, the rack will still only be as strong as it's attachment to the mounting on the car. BaseRack uses vertical rails...
Hope you've already confirmed the answer, but yes, that is correct. The rail is 1-5/8" tall, and to the top of the slats is 2.75". Additionally, if you're mounting something larger than the platform (like my RTT). The corner pieces will add additional 1/4" to the height (above the slats).
Yeah, the different mounting options and their load ratings were definitely very interesting. If your RTT is 60x48 closed, then it will cover the entire rack as well (if you opt for the 61x51. Which, I think would also require you to mount the Rack to the upside down RTT first before securing...
I hear ya; off roading on difficult trails adds so much more stress and load on the whole assembly...in all directions....not just a downward vertical load. That's why I really like the welded platform of the BaseRack (rather than pieces lego'd together). The cross section of the BaseRack...
Couldn't find any pictures of the mounted rack w/ RTT and the rack w/ RTT is hanging up on my ceiling hoist and not currently attached to the rails. But this is the illustration that caused me to move up to 71 x 51 rack. Without it, there would be too much of the tent hanging over the std...
Tyler,
I found 1 or 2 other "quick mounts" in addition to Front Runner, but the quick mounts still have a specific mounting interface, and I don't believe the Bridge Plates from ARB is compatible with any of them. Luckily, I decided early on to go away from the quick mounts for several...
Thanks!!
I know the 4xe stock already have higher rated springs and stands several inches higher than a non-4xe JLU, but all the weight that will be added with my mods, I wasn't sure if I needed a suspension lift; so I'm also waiting to see how the rig does on the rough trails on a full load...
Now THAT, is one frame-able shot if I've ever seen one!!
Awesome!!
I've got the exact same 4xe JLUR from the looks of things. Are you running stock rims/tires? What bumper do you have?
Sure! Looks like we've all done the same research as the options are just incredibly limited. Unfortunately, how to mounting a large RTT was not a use-case the engineers took into consideration when they designed the racks. For instance, had I not opted for the larger rack 71x51 to pair with...
Thanks Art!!
I think my favorite part was repurposing simple magnets and metal strap ties (76 cents @) to have a removable mount of the headliner to the sound deadening of the hard top.
Thomas
In my case, I ended up not adding additional washers on the crush tubes, as it raised the mount points of the hardtop, and I didn't want the hardtop bolt to bend the fiberglass. I was lucky that I was doing an intricate healiner design & install that used both sound deadening material under the...
No arguments from here!! Although, if you do not need the dynamic load & rough trail capability of a rack (fitted with a large RTT such as the James Baroud hardshell tents), the other options (Front Runner, Rhino) may be a better option.
I have had to fashion tools just to secure the...
For my needs, I have the James Baroud Grand Raid (essentially an Evasion XXL). It is nearly 90" x "65", so I elected to go with a 71" platform. It works with the same mounting kit, and provides better cantilever support for the extended length of the RTT. Btw, Freedom panels are still...
Depends on your needs and requirements. If your needs are similar to mine, there really is no other good options out there unless you go with an exoskeleton type (like Gobi). If your needs are more utility, you'll have less anxiety in the install process if you go with the other low profile...
You know, that brings up a really good question; for such a large successful company, why can't ARB properly pack their products for shipment? My BaseRack Fit Kit came completely jumbled up and my Platform came ripped and nearly opened. As such, there were definitely powder coat damage to many...
