I did finally get mine back - the whole process including re-doing leaking seals that they reused took over 6 weeks. The axle did have the new part number so I hope this is resolved in an updated design or properly assembled part (or whatever the root cause was). Jeepcares actually did a fine...
Finally just got mine back after second waiting period to put new seals on (also backordered but not ordered with the axle) after new axle was replaced and immediately leaking. All seems good for now so we'll have to wait and see.
Can you confirm if your prior two replacements were the AA part number? Incidentally I'm running 285/65R18 (no lift) and got no such blame or caveat....and anyway I had just put them on when I noticed the sound, stock had been on until a couple days before I noticed it.
So apparently when they shipped the axle, they said to reuse the original axle seals, which is what started leaking within a day of replacement. Just talk to them and the axle seals....are...you guessed it....on backorder.
Also, I've asked what's changed from the AA to the AD part number, they don't have any idea and said that Jeep will not tell them those details. BUt I do know from this long thread that some people who've gone through more than once replacement were getting the AA part number. If that's any clue.
Part kept getting delayed. 4 days stretched out to several weeks. Then the dealer received it but didn't call me - I called Jeep Cares and they found that the axle had been sitting at the dealer for 3 days. A week later they scheduled me in and had it replaced in two days. I brought it home...
In my experience the problem is subtle to start - I first heard it driving down my quiet alley when it was finally warm enough to have windows open and I had no music on. I have no idea how long it was actually occurring before this. If you have music on with any volume you may not notice...
So the axle that was promised some time ago keeps getting delayed and I'm now at the one month mark without a repair. Jeepcares hasn't checked in for some time now.
"The FCA engineers are claiming my 285/70/17 tires are part of the problem"
@JeepCares - coming from a marketing manager, I'd say you guys have a product positioning problem with Jeep Wranglers if that's really the message from FCA
So much for the reputation of Wranglers and their engineering to encourage offroading an modification.
Mine are 285/65R18 and I didn't hear any such feedback - regardless I had them on only a few days when I heard the sound - and the fluid was pitch black when I went in within two days of that...
My advisor said that stuff is kept tightly secret. My guess is that, barring doing a costly recall, they wouldn't want the information out because informed people will choose not to buy a new JL without confirmation that it's got the improved axle/LSD on there. So the world may never know....
I had done some googling and found nothing with that number ending in AB or AC, which possibly means they had a couple design iterations that never made it to production. I also did a little skimming back through this 74 page thread and found posts from spring 2019 of people getting...
That's what I was told. I asked if we could find out what has changed but was told Jeep doesn't share that information. If I can get the part number details on my invoice when I get it back I'll post it.
Well, the part did not show up as promised so I'm still waiting - but my service advisor has confirmed it is definitely a revised part number from the original.
