When I fill up with gas, I check the oil and make sure it's not too dirty, but other than that, I use the Jeep's alert system. I try to go no more than 12 months. I don't drive my Jeep 10,000 miles a year. More like 6,000. So I do it annually in the Spring. That usually lasts me all year.
