I went through this hassle last year with a set of 4.88 Yukons. I ultimately swapped them out to spicer 5.13s at a different shop. The shop that installed the Yukons had the rear axle apart three times to adjust things, replace bearings, etc. This also included replacing the ring and pinion...
It definitely holds gears better than it did with 4.88s. It’s not too much of a difference, but I appreciate the little extra boost in crawl ratio when I’m in 4Lo. It’s kind of hard to describe it, but the transmission just feels “happier” with the 5.13s than the 4.88s.
I’ve had both. Initially went with 4.88s. Had to have both diffs redone due to a poor setup when I came to the realization that the initial installer wasn’t as good as he made himself out to be. I went with 5.13s when I had them redone and hands down prefer them over the 4.88s. I have a 3.6L w/...
I would have loved to try and do the job myself, but I couldn’t justify buying all the tools for essentially one use. Plus, I didn’t particularly want the first time I try it to be on my daily driver. I’m just glad it’s over.
I’m back with an update on mine. As previously posted I had a local transmission and driveline shop install Yukon 4.88s in March of last year. The rear started making noise earlier this year. I spent a few months taking the guy for a test drive to let him hear the sound and he kept insisting he...
I don’t disagree, but I also ride a harley and I hear the same low reliability comments about harleys all the time. Quantitatively, I’ve had three harleys over the last five years with about 60k miles combined on them and never had any of them in for anything other than routine maintenance...
But what about all the Tacoma owners that say Jeeps are junk and Toyotas are the most reliable off-road rigs you can buy? I guess this study is fake news to them?
The incompetence goes beyond the service department. I bought my wrangler with the hard top. A few weeks ago I picked up a used soft top from a local seller. The foam tape on one of the door surrounds was kind of worn out, so I wanted to replace it to make sure I get a good seal. There is a...
I would have thought that they would get it right on mine as well. I have Yukon gears and rebuild kits. When my installer, who sells and installs Yukon only, called Randy’s and told them he was working on a 2020 JL unlimited rubicon rear axle, they told him 22-33 in-lbs and to set it up like a...
Well, my saga continues. Had all of the bearings replaced in my rear diff today. Still making the same noise. No improvement. I did, however, find out that the shop that’s been dealing with my Jeep has been relying on Randy’s Ring and Pinion tech support to get setup specs. He mentions in...
I am running 37s with 4.88s on mine. I have the 3.6 and 8 speed auto. The 4.88s with 37s will get you pretty darn close to the way it felt stock. When I take mine in to get the noisy gear issue fixed in September, I’m swapping to 5.13s.
To my knowledge, ARB is the only aftermarket locker available for the JL rubicon. The catch is that it requires 35 spline axle shafts. The next catch is that RCV is the only company that makes 35 spline front axle shafts that I’m aware of. RCV = $$$$. The third catch is that nobody makes 35...
I’m currently living the nightmare of noisy gears after I had Yukon 4.88s put in my Jeep. I’m scheduled to have them replaced with spicer 5.13s in September. When I talked to the sales guy at the new shop doing my gears, he did mention that the rear axles on the JL can be a bit finicky to set...
