Offroam uses a single screw & two guide pins - this way you don't have to worry about periodically checking that both screws are equally tight so you won't risk losing the mount. Offroam has the rubber liner contained within a groove so it won't ooze out over time or mark up your air vent...
I guess we now rely on some average 3rd party bits and bobs maker as the source of truth?
I was hoping for a Jeep reference(a manual etc), not a product placement.
I tried a whole bunch and looks like the thread is M5
Length around 8mm below the contact surface seems to work, since there looks to be a decent amount of space below the hard point.
If anyone comes across any official documentation to confirm this - please post here.
This will work on the 4xe and hold your phone on corrugated roads. Just make sure you have a decent case - made by Apple. Too many cases use poor magnets or set them too far from surface for a weak hold...
If you have a MagSafe phone - this will work well. From photos you have a 20mm ball

This holder is charging also, but I believe a non-charging option will be available (for less).
Over a few months of tinkering I managed to integrate a mounting ball right into the air vent clamp I shared with the forum earlier.
It's a much cleaner setup imho. Check it out here - curious on your thoughts.
And as before it keeps the phone away from the windshield, doesn't block the air...

I am glad to see you got this to work.
I haven't had much luck with a 3" long Ram arm always working to loosen the ball (especially bad for me when off-roading or hitting the rough gravel roads), so after a bunch of time on this ended up with my clamp system.
But your post inspired me to try a...
It's been top of mind for me ever since I've come across similar comments that raised concerns re. airbag deployment for pretty much all phone and accessory mounting options on the market.
And these all have a valid point!
If you mount anything between you/your passenger and path of airbag...

Here is a simple solution I designed and machined from solid aluminium. It clamps to the central air vents and installs in under a minute. No drilling, no glue, no tape.

I've decided to Open Source this Air Vent Clamp Mount design - meaning that all CAD files and documentation will be available to anyone who requests them free of charge. I am still working on cleaning up the assembly and creating the docs s.t. anyone can understand how it is built.
Anyone can...
I was thinking of a simpler way to securely mount my phone and other overlanding gear I have and plan on getting (Garmin inReach mini) - without obstructing my windshield or drilling/disassembling the dashboard. Here is what I ended up designing and building.
The air vent mount mechanically...
