I can duplicate the crashing consistently by plugging some devices into the USB ports. It makes me feel like it's a hardware thing. Maybe a voltage drop causing it? Or maybe it is a software thing as it tries to communicate with the device?

You should not need shims. Take the tail gate bolts lose from the hinges and adjust it. If it sags when the door is open then the gate is carrying weigh and not the tire carrier. Once the Hong is lose you can adjust the gate independently of the tire carrier and it works beautifully

I had the same issue. I just took the bolts lose that hold the tailgate stop bracket to the body and let it self adjust a bit. After some tweaking it worked just fine. It did make some rough noises at first so I added to a little grease. After that it's been just fine and still holds well...
