I run 87 in my 2018 JLU 2.0T and on my last trip, at sea level, recorded 27mpg using fuelly. No problems. I only fill up with premium when driving in the mountains at high altitude.

and it works well for larger items, tools, and doesn't take up much cargo space. It is keyed alike with my console lock box.
The eTorque System charges the 48v battery then the 12v battery is charged from the 48v battery. So yes it seems to be a very large dual battery system. I too am interested to see potential 48V accessories!
