We did a Jeep Adventure Academy day a few years ago and I asked them about this - they said that the temp sensor is de-activated when in 4L because you're probably running real slow, causing heat buildup in the engine bay which would cause a false temp reading.

Follow-up: We went online to the Columbia Jeep dealer and got an appointment - we could have got a same-day appointment but chose to drop it off the following day, which was a Thursday. Described the symptons and the service advisor said it sounded like death wobble. He said they'd check it out...

Both our JLU and our JT are our only vehicles (except for our motorhome) so they are daily drivers, but being retired we don't drive them daily...
