Hey Andy,
You are definitely asking the right questions. It has a lot to do with the JL "smart" alternator logic and our driving habits. I used to have a daily commute, but now work out of my home. So I'm using a battery maintainer if I'm not driving enough to charge my batteries.
This is...
First, I absolutely agree it's a terrible design.
However, I've been running the factory ESS dual battery system successfully for almost 6 years (2018 JLU) without issue. I've only had to change both batteries once DIY in that time. I also had the dealership install two new batteries shortly...
This!
The voltage on the dash display confuses many people. As said above:
Engine running: charging voltage displayed
Engine off: battery voltage displayed
All I can say is the charging system/software sounds like it could be different on your diesel. The data in the original post of this thread holds true for standard JL ICEs. The dash voltage displayed will be all over the range from high 11s to 14.5v in a regular drive depending on the scenario...
The recall seems to limited to the 3.5" IPC. There's already a discussion in the recalls/TSB thread.

I have a Sport, but with the upgraded IPC. Here's a couple examples to show the difference:
3.5" IPC (impacted by recall)
Upgraded IPC (not part of this recall)
If you're hoping to find an existing STL for your rock lights, you'll need to provide more details on exactly what you're running. Most "rock lights" are smaller than 7" so not sure what you have installed.
Do you have any specs/dimensions on "7 inch Jeep JL Rock led Lights" you refer to? I've designed a number of things in Blender myself. If you have a 3d printer, designing parts yourself is a great next step.
Good advice already provided above. I'll confirm since I'm running takeoff Rubicon suspension (with leveling spacers - 2" lift overall) and tires. Only a slight hit to mpgs. However, I also added mopar lift LCAs to firm up the steering.
I'm very happy with the results and running it for a few...
My 2018 JLU auto start/stop (ESS) has been running seemlessly since purchased new spring 2019. The only caveat is you need to understand and monitor your battery charge level/health. New vehicles purchased have probably been sitting on the lot unused and the batteries could be in a weakened...
Still very satisfied with this setup. Several long road trips under my belt after installation and holding up well. Greatly reduced my fatigue on long drives with bad roads/weather.
I really don't care either way, but do participate in ducking on occasion. I've been ducked a number of times and return the favor by ducking others. My wife is the instigator and enjoys it.
It's good to have something positive to share, because many people are stuck in a negative mindset most...
