Mopar/Bolt Lock Delay New Theory:

Like many of us, I have a Mopar Hood Lock on order--now approaching a year on backorder, and everybody realizes that this is manufactured by Bolt--who displayed the Hood Lock at SEMA. It looked great in the SEMA pictures on this forum.

I bought a Bolt Receiver lock that works fine with my JL key. In contact with Bolt regarding some questions, I was told that the reason for the Hood Lock delay were design issues between Bolt and Mopar. So the forum comments about the lock mechanism being the reason for the Mopar Hood lock are likely unfounded.

I just had another observation/thought:

That Hood Lock goes in the top of the center grill slot. So does the new Forward Camera in the Gladiator. Given the common platform of the Wrangler and the Gladiator, I am sure that it is only a matter of which model year Jeep adds that camera to the Wrangler. Can't have two accessories occupying the same space, now, can we?

My theory: Mopar probably had to tell Bolt that the more important and more revenue-generating, factory-installed camera had to go top center, and that Bolt needed to move the yet-introduced, aftermarket accessory Hood Lock lower or to another grill slot. If this were a change that was indeed possible, considering horns and other components behind the grill, that would have delayed the Hood Lock's design, tooling, production, inventory, etc. Probably dramatically changed the cost as well, as now we have not one but two possible "holes" in the Grill's grid backing.

I just wish somebody in the know would make an official announcement and/or explanation regarding the Mopar Hood Lock so that some of us can decide to wait or to move onto other options to secure the engine bay area.

MH
It would be nice if Bolt would go ahead and release theirs for sale but I'm sure that Mopar has got them by the ying-yang saying that they will not use them for the Mopar part if they were to do that. Stupid decision though, because JL's and JLU's will probably out number the Gladiator by about 98%-2% in sales. I don't ever remember buying a new generation of a new car that has been more un-prepared with replacement parts and accessories for the new line like Mopar has been with the JL and JLU. It's very disappointing!

I'm hoping that Mopar releases their JL hood lock sometime before my 4-year lease is up.

But I understand. A simple locking mechanism has to take years of R&D, much like the Joint Strike Fighter or a Ford class aircraft carrier.

How hard would it be to devise a cable that prevents the backup hood lever (the one you release when the latches are unattached and the hood is ajar) to be open, kept in place by a cable that when pulled from within the rig unlocks it...

...like (wait for it) pretty much every other vehicle in production.

...if necessary, key (JL matching or not, automatically configured or user pin set) based for those who keep their tops off and need the security.

Bolt's got the automatic cylinders, MOPAR, for example, the user pin configured matching key locking gas caps cylinders.

The garage door industry's had something similar for 50 years:

@JeepCares : I think there is one thing for certain here. Release of this product has only been delayed by "suits" haggling. This isn't an issue of "can we do it" because all of the components are already in the market in other forms.

There is a lesson to be re-learned here FCA that you already know. Screw with the Wrangler owner and they, or a 3rd party develop a way that puts you and your licensee out of the market space as a cost for your delay.

Food for thought. Stop dilly dallying.

The subject "missing" Hood Lock was on display at SEMA 2018. Please see the pictures in the thread below:

The hood lock mounting position is right where the new Gladiator front camera goes. Per my post above, I wonder if this design conflict is the reason for the delay.
If I were rich I'd have "my people" contact Taylor Swift's to change the name and lyrics of this song, and sing it at SEMA, to:

"We are never, ever, getting the MOPAR or Bolt JL Hood Lock"

Let's just hope it costs a *little* less. ;)

As I mentioned in a previous post, if you want to purchase one, the first and most reliable source will be a Jeep dealership. Call your local dealer periodically (now, daily, weekly, monthly, whenever you prefer) and check availability through them. Why people seem to think that Quadratec, a third party vendor, will be supplied before Jeep dealerships makes no sense. And consequently, relying on when Quadratec says they will be shipping is laughable. They want to pre-sell as many as possible (a few weeks ago, they already had 150+ pre-ordered). If you ordered one from Quadratec today, you’d be lucky to see it until at least 2021.

Now that both are finally available, what are the differences? The Bolt looks to be the better option for several reasons.

1. Bolt is 1/2 the price. Less then $100 online.
2. Bolt re-keys automatically.
3. Bolt allows key removal in locked and un-locked positions.
4. Bolt has a lifetime warranty.

Did I miss anything?

No, that pretty well sums it up.
