So, I’m a newb and I have questions on recovery gear.

I need a basic kit while I am waiting/saving on my winch. I am thinking:

bubba rope renegade 20-foot (kenetic) rope plus
A couple of bubba rope soft shackles plus
A bubba rope black op 20-foot tow rope.

‘what do you think of this “kit”? Am I missing anything?

also, when I do get a winch, would it be possible to use the tow rope as a “tree saver” since the tow rope is 3” wide just like a tree saver?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with bubba rope. I carry two straps. 3 in x 30 foot rated for 30K pounds. I carry two because I've broke a strap before. I also carry an assortment of shackles - big metal ones. And, a pair of gloves.

You can use a strap as tree saver but have to deal with the extra length.

When you get a winch, get a snatch block.

BTW, you missed some good deals on Black Friday on winches. I scored a 12K Smittybilt for under 500.

20’ is on the short side for a recovery strap. My 30’ seems perfect. When one rig is tugging on another, you don’t want to be too close. Good thinking on the kinetic. I’ve never needed a tow strap, unless you have to get towed home- but it would work as a tree saver/winch line extension.

I apologize if I'm hijacking but I'm in a similar situation. I'm also a newbie and just ordered my first winch and am now looking at recovery gear. At first I was looking at an ARB kit to cover the essentials now I'm thinking of putting together my own kit. This may be a bit over the top but I was thinking this may be an area were spending a bit more might be good. So what do you think?

Bubba Rope 176680RDG 7/8" x 30' Breaking Strength Original Rope with Standard Red Eye - 28600 lbs. Capacity
Bubba Rope 176000OR 10' Tree Hugger
ARB ARB220 Winch Recovery Damper Orange Line Dampener for Winch Use Precaution
ARB Products 10100020 20000 lbs Snatch Block
WARN 92093 Epic Shackle 3/4"

Bubba Rope Black OP 3" x 20' Tow Strap

I was thinking of leaving out the tow strap...
Is a 10' tree strap good enough?

If I had it all to do over again, I would consider one of the Factor55 kits:
https://factor55.com/product-category/vehicle-recovery-kits/

There’s something to be said for having it all pack away cleanly.

That said, most of my rope is from Master Pull. I don’t use straps, just various types of rope (some kinetic, some static).

From what I've seen in other posts I'm leaning towards rope. I'll have to take a close look Master Pull. I've seen a lot of good comments for Bubba Rope and they seem similar to Master Pull...

I did look at the Factor 55 kits but they seem a bit on the steep side...

I am very happy with my Master Pull rope. I was pointed at them by some folks who teach first responders and power companies how to drive their rigs offroad as well as how to recover those beasts. There’s a difference in the coatings of Bubba vs Master Pull. If I remember right (please do your own research), the Master Pull rope is coated in such a way that it doesn’t need to dry out if it gets wet.

In rope vs strap contests, kinetic rope doesn’t need to “rest” like kinetic straps do. Rope can pull all day, but straps need some downtime after three pulls or so. This isn’t really a situation that I’m worried about, but it’s nice insurance should the situation arise.

Thanks for the info Mike I will definitely take a closer look at the coatings.

A sensible investment is to replace the hook on your winch with a closed loop. I have the Factor 55 Prolink E expert...

Factor 55 offer a range of closed loop products, the Flatlink etc. They are expensive (especially so here in the U.K.) but I don’t think buying budget recovery gear is the way to go.

As soon as I bought the winch I ordered the Factor 55 Flatlink and rope guard and got all the other essentials from Maximus-3. My JLUR is having a good Christmas. Black Friday sales are dangerous.

Thanks for the input so far folks. I am not too worried about brands (I probably shouldn’t have even listed the brands). Rather, I am trying to get commentary on the kit itself.......

Any commentary on the kit;
20-foot kenetic rope,
two soft shackles,
and a 20-foot tow rope (also used as a tree hugger, albeit too long for “easy use”)

a couple of folks above suggest 20-foot may be too short for a kenetic rope. Thoughts?
Am I missing something for this “basic” kit? Thoughts?

Info on winches and devices for them is great but that’s my next step....... now only looking for direct feedback on the kit mentioned above for “basic” recovery ......

20' is to short to me. I like 30'. When using momentum it's nice to be a little further away from the other vehicle and have a little more reaction time and a little more runway. Also increases the likelihood that the recovering vehicle will be on better ground.

I also have a soft side tool bag that I keep all my recovery gear in so when SHTF I grab one bag and know I have all my options available.

I look at it as survival gear, not just recovery gear.

You can get 2-10000lb 30' straps at TSC for $130
That leaves you with $230 to get:
hand saw
hatchet
various sized Zip ties
Duct Tape (saved me when the sole peeled back on by boot)
various sizes and lengths of rope/paracord
Multitool
backpack with extra set of dry clothes
paper towels (along with extra clothes and duct tape works for emergency wound treatment)
toilet paper
rain coat
gloves
can of sterno
bic lighters
flashlight
tree pruning shears
assorted epoxy/JB weld putty etc
Tire plug kit
12V tire pump
metal/ceramic coated coffee cup
instant coffee
iodine water treatment tablets
tarp/space blanket

Food and water in small insulated lunch box or cooler.

I store straps in a flexible rubber horse feed bowl (if they get muddy it gives you somewhere put them where they don't trash your interior. )

The rest of the gear is in a back pack with many pockets, strapped to/under the roll bar on the drivers side where it does not obstruct my view when changing lanes and stays out of the way of my folded up rear seat.

The storage bin in the floor is for extra boxes of ammo.

This will ensure you're more prepared than just a $360 bag of straps.
