There it is, picked her up 2 weeks later, replaced LSD and carrier! Thanks to this thread and Jeep Cares. It would not have happened with out. Don't give up.

Anyone here practice law? Wondering what recourse we have if Jeep can't get a fix out. I am about to schedule my Jeep to go in for the 2nd time for this issue (defect). 1st time they swapped out the entire carrier assembly and one of the shafts. Started knocking again about 8 months later. It's great they are repairing under warranty, but what is going to happen when the warranty runs out? Seems they don't have a fix. Lemon Law protection, perhaps??
Maybe Lemon Law?
I was told that that's the way to go if the issue is not fixed.

That was my next step, lemon is able to start after the same issue is brought in 3 times. That being said, I had to get a lawyer like 12 years ago when I had issues with a dakota and came out in my favor.

After my lift was installed between 10 and 20 mph when not hitting the gas I am getting a knocking sound sounds like possibly from the rear drive shaft and one have a fix for this?? I know on my Tacoma I added a driveshaft spacer after my lift to adjust the driveshaft angle anyone else experiencing this problem after a lift?
I don’t know if you have found a fix for your problem but I had the same issue with my 2018 JL Sport. Had to take it to the dealer multiple times before I got someone to hear what I was talking about. They replaced the rear drive shaft, the rear axil assembly and the rear axil shafts. They found excessive wear on the gears with metal shavings in the lubricant. I have 10k miles on my Jeep. I have had it back for 2 days & so far the noise is gone. They kept my Jeep almost 4 weeks waiting on parts. Lucky for me they gave me a loaner to drive. I would take it to the dealer & make them understand it happens while you are coasting off the gas and bring up this forum. I would also get Jeep cares involved. They opened a case on it & communicated with the dealership about the issue. Hope this helps. ✌

Joining the ranks of really bummed out owners. I recorded the sound by throwing my phone on the rear floor area.

Is this pretty much what you all are experiencing?

Hi Brian,
I know you reached out to us previously regarding this. I did want to remind you that we can connect you with a Case Specialist to assist you while working with your dealer. If this is of interest, feel free to PM us.

Hey everyone. My 2018 Wrangler unlimited sport with Limited slip had this same noise develop around 16k miles and progressively got worse. I checked the rear diff fluid and it was black as coal ( burnt) with clutch material in it. Took in to Dealer last week. They called and said it needs rebuilt..It’s getting Case kit etc.. The dealer told me parts wouldn’t be in until Jan 3 2020 ! I wonder if the back order being that far out has anything to do with them rebuilding a lot of these rear axles? If I get any more info on it I will post.

Just an update. Took it to a different dealership with the help of @JeepCares and the tech I rode with acknowledged the noise I was concerned about (albeit it was not knocking as loud as it normally does on warmer days, there's a cold snap here in Pennsylvania right now and it doesn't happen as often while cold) and the sloppy feel in the drive train. They took a sample of my diff fluid and it was much darker than it should be for only having 13,000 miles. Had the diff cover pulled and the technician could see the clutch packs not engaging at all when you spin the wheels, the spider gears and bearings were chewed up a bit, and the rear was acting like an open differential instead of a limited slip. Parts should be coming in within 5 days all under warranty. :please:
Update again! Dropped my Jeep off Monday night at the dealership and got it back last night. Drive great now! The only knocking I get now is from the d-ring on my trailer hitch, which I admit did scare me at first. Thanks, @JeepCares!

Hi Josh,

Jeep Cares can you find a dealership near me that will fix my issue? The dealership that I took it too with jeep Cares assistance only changed the rear diff fluid and made excuses and claimed there was no knocking sound (there definitely is) and that the black fluid was from my lift and tires. The front diff fluid still looks new and the fluid that they changed in the rear is already black again after just 500 miles. There obviously is an issue because mine is exhibiting the same symptoms as everyone else here that are getting their rear diffs replaced. We really shouldn't have to go through so much time, BS, and frustration with this considering that we all paid an expensive price for a product that has a warranty for a reason.

Hi Jack,
I certainly understand your frustration. As customer care agents, we do not receive mechanical training, and therefore, we do rely on our dealers to diagnose and address concerns. If you decide to get a second opinion from another dealer and would like a new case opened, please send us a PM.

Do you have any aftermarket parts on it, lift, wheels and tires, etc?

I have been stalking the forum/thread for a while now as my 2018 JL is having the same problem. I took it in to the dealer and they said that it was not loud enough to cause a concern. Guess I will keep driving until it gets worse.

How are you all convincing them to fix it. I have a 2.5 rubicon express lift with 35's and the also told me that they might not be able to do warranty work because of it?

So I opened up the cover on my rear D44 LSD after I finished swapping both axles for the Rubicon takeoffs and this is the lube that came out. Didn't really find any metal particles, but there didn't seem to be a lot of fluid. I did notice some small particles that weren't metal, could be the plastic bearing cages that have been talked about. It's never been opened before and there have been no leaks, so I can only assume this is all the fluid that was in it from the factory. I drained the pan and basically got one quart and maybe another 8 oz. The ring and pinion seem fine, but there was a lot of slop on the side gears to the axle shaft splines.
Here's a quick video I took:
