What axles do I have?

2018 Jeep Wrangler Sport
I have a Sport/MT and stock 3.45 gears with anti spin differential.

Is there a way to tell from the numbers on the covers?

The rear cover numbers are:
10024907
068-8
REV-D

The front:
10047747
067-8

I have included a picture of the back only, was not able to take a good picture of the front.

In trucks it makes sense to have a larger axle in the rear because you’ll have a lot more weight in the bed but I’ve always wondered why SUVs do it. I figure it’s because a lot of SUVs were based on trucks but I don’t get why wranglers bother with the smaller axle in the front. Anyone got ideas besides cost?

I figure it’s because a lot of SUVs were based on trucks but I don’t get why wranglers bother with the smaller axle in the front. Anyone got ideas besides cost?
So they can sell bigger axles in the front for more money.

If you said FCA has been selling about 200,000 Jeeps on average for the past 5 years, it would be a little low. But say a million Jeeps in the past 5 years.

Just to get a feel for why with some ficticious numbers, if you look on the Mopar parts online catalogs, you'll see a Dana 30 for about $1900 and the Dana 44 for about $2800. ~$900 difference or about 47% difference. If you said they don't pay anywhere near those prices for these components and say SWAG them at about 1/3rd the price they retail for; that's $627 for the Dana 30 and $924 for the Dana 44, for a differential (pun intended) of about $297. And if you said 20 % of Jeeps are Dana 44 (front) equipped that leaves 800,000 with Dana 30s. Then multiply the roughly $300 differential (there's that pun again) times 800,000 Jeeps, that's $240 million. Now go around and start saving a nickel here and there and a few dollars here and there, and it starts to add up. A million here, a million there, pretty soon, you're talking real money.

You still get a lot more weight on the rear when you're climbing a hill, so the stronger axle will be beneficial.

reasoning behind the different axle is pricing and use. you have to take in that alot of people will not use the sport like owners of the rubicon will. second reason is they are a rear wheel driven suv on a daily bases. there for the axle is seeing way more action that the front does with load and wear. there for you put in a stronger main axle and never have issues with needed to replace it from normal wear and tare. Just my thought behind it.

The Larger axles is on the rear because it sees 99% of the driving. Its a rear wheel drive vehicle until you need 4x4. So it sees most of the TORQUE for the Life of the vehicle.

My sport is manual 6 speed.

Depends on what size tire you want. Since you have 6spd I’d go 4.88
