There is another thread on this forum which I would link to if I knew how. It got me thinking.

I had a 2010 JKU with about a two inch lift. Its steering, while not as bad as the JLs is was very busy. The fix for it, on a lifted jeep is changing the lower control arms to adjustable ones so you can lengthen them to increase your alignment caster. I never did it, I just dealt with it on the 2010.

The other thread references 1/4 inch longer lower control arms, part # 68322798AA which are Mopar parts that come with the Mopar two inch jeep lift. Some guys have put them on their stock Jeeps, increased their caster to about 6 degrees, and claimed they had their problems go away. Just like that.

Apparently the JLUR and the JLU share the same stock lower control arms. Not sure how much higher a JLUR is than a JLU, but I can guarantee the JLU has more caster than the JLUR. Also in the other thread someone claims the 2020 Gladiators have the longer lower control arms stock. And could possibly be standard on the 2020 JLUR.

They cost about $60 for the pair if you shop around. I ordered a set. Curious to try this once they arrive. After my JKU experience, I suspect the lower control arms play a big role in the JL steering, especially on the JLUR.

For reference the stock lower control arms on my 2020 JLUR have part number 68250242AB etched into them. Not the same part number as the ones from the Mopar two inch lift kit. I have not received the new control arms yet, so I don't have any idea if they differ in length.

The other thread is in the suspension and steering section.

I put the longer Mopar LCAs on my JL and the caster when from 4.6 to 6, which helped the wandering. It didnā€™t do anything for the looseness and play. Itā€™s at the dealer. Again.

Edit to add that now I wish I put adjustable LCAs on and still might do that.

Are you running a factory steering stabilizer?

No. I had the V41 recall done and it did nothing to affect the steering. We put the Falcon 2.2 on and that is great for making the steering more firmā€”especially when turning. I didnā€™t expect it to improve the play in the steering and it didnā€™t.

One thing we did (hubby did :)) was to check the torque on the sway links. They were loose and after torquing them to spec, the looseness was improved. They excessive play was still present so I took it to the dealer. Two visits later, they are replacing the steering box. Iā€™m hoping that the box does the trick for the play.

Ive owned a 2018 JL Sport, and now I own a 2019 JL Sport S. I put 13k miles on the 2018 before it wrecked, never had steering issues, it was recalled but I never took it. Recall notice said only a small % of vehicles had the issue, so mine was prob ok. I received the notice after the wreck.lol.

The 2019 JL Sport S has no steering issues, drives exactly the same as my 2018. So idk, I think the steering issue occurs only on a few bad apples.

Had our Dec 18 build JLUR in for the steering damper. They already replaced the track bar and even now with the new damper, still has the same play. The Steering Box is the AD model. Thinking of going in for the updated AE.

What's crazy is the loaner we had for the Steering Damper was a '19 Sport with 1500 miles. It steered perfect. Steering felt night and day compared to ours. I looked and it also had the AD steering box, just like ours. Wonder if we truly have a crap steering box or if it's due to sport vs rubicon.

Iā€™ve written more in the colossal loose steering thread, but when I had my JLR in for steering issues (for the fourth time), I had a Sport unlimited as a loaner. The interesting observation is that while it had some play in the steering wheel (less than an inch), it drove *much* better than my Jeep. I have my caster at 6*, so that should be similar. The sportā€™s steering felt more cohesive and not disconnected like mine. Interesting.

I ordered my JLUS June 26th and took delivery last Thursday. I can move the wheel from 11:45 to 12:15 with no effect on swaying the Jeep. The steering is so loose that keeping it between the lines is tough. When taking a turn it seems fine. I'm sure I have the issue y'all are talking about. I have an appt to bring it to the dealer this Saturday. The stabilizer sticker below shows to be AE......I need this fixed for driving like this sucks.

Just for clarification, when your driving if you move the wheel from 12:00 to 11:45 or to 12:15 the Jeep continues straight?

If I kept it there it would move over but the steering is so loose if I go back and forth that way it doesn't sway. I went out of town this weekend and had a charger as a rental and that steering was tight and reacted immediately.

Hi Lothar,
As mentioned to your fellow forum members, should you decide to have your dealer look into this further, feel free to send our team a private message. We'd be happy to ensure everything is properly documented as well as connect you with a Case Specialist.

Some Wrangler steering is questionable and can be improved upon. Even when perfect a Wrangler or any other vehicle with a steering box will never feel like the Charger steering. This is by design. Wrangler and Charger are 2 different animals with 2 very different purposes. The Charger has a totally different steering design. A Wrangler steering box will never feel or steer like a rack in pinion with a quick ratio. Unfortunately a lot of new Wrangler owners don't or did not realize this before buying one. Hopefully the dealer can improve your steering to a acceptable level. Also check your tire pressures because the factory fills to 4o+ psi. Owners found that 36-psi improves steering. Good luck with this.
