Urgent - Check your oil levels. Did the Jeep dealer put in 6 or 5 quarts of oil in your JL?

Since this is an on going issue / problem. What recourse do owners have if, lets say, I am deployed, the wife takes my JLU Sahara in for an oil change and they over fill by one quart? The engine is damaged by the time I get back from deployment.
Your best strategy, IMO, would be to tell your wife bout the issue and make sure she talks to the dealer before service. You should also teach her how to check the oil and read the dipstick —- something she should likely already know?

Happened on my last oil change in May, paper work said 6qt change, I verified it was over filled and took it back to them where they changed it completely back out with 5qt with no issues.

there is many other threads on this. Its a sad reality but the entire FCA Manufacturer to Dealer Service Network is a travesty. And yes they are overfilling the 3.6 Litre engines all the time with 6 quarts instead of 5. I had it happen, had an argument with the Service General Manager at my local dealer about it after his arrogant response and ignorance toward the situation, I had them re-change the oil and I literally stood over the service technician and supervised him in putting only 5 quarts of oil in my vehicle, thats what it took to get it right. And even with all that they still put 6 quarts on the invoice...... you can't make this stuff up.

Right...There is a systematic issue here. The only time my local dealer did the oil change properly on my wifes jeep, the invoice still said 6 qts. I's in the system that way and no one cares/ is able to fix it.

Hey @JeepCares how about passing on some info to the bigwigs...There should be a TSB created just so dealers know to put in the correct amount of oil. This seems like an extreme measure, but obviously somewhere along the line the dealers got the wrong info somewhere, or files were never updated when the models changed from JK to JL.

You should be able to determine how many miles will be driven in a certain period. You may never get to that millage and be back.
Otherwise, no dealer have her take it to a trusted Jeep shop in the area.

If you don't do your own oil changes run to a quick lube or a small shop. They get so many types of cars they're more likely to read the work order than not. It's not 100% but it's better than heading over to a dealership where more than likely you're just another Jeep in the crowd.
I'd roll the dice with the dealer. At least there is a degree of accountability.

Negative on most "quick oil change" places. I know of more then a few people who have had serious problems going to them. Overfills, forgetting to add any oil, wrong fluids into wrong reservoirs, stripped or lose oil plugs, overly righten oil filters, loose oil filters, etc. Nothing like having having a engine lock up on the expressway 15 minutes after a oil change because the tech forgot to tighten the oil plug or oil filter. Or having power steering fluid poured into your brake reservoir. I know people who had this actually happen to them at different quick oil change places.

Anyone who changes the oil and fails to check the dipstick afterwords is a ... “dipshit”! Absolutely NO excuse for this one. Unbelievable!
I hear ya. I even showed the service manager the actual dipstick, didn't even phase them, they literally go by the specs FCA gives them, and cannot deviate from that. Very odd.

Thank you , I had the dealer change my oil last week and after reading this blog this morning I checked my bill and yes they not only put in 6 quarts they also used 5w20 instead of 0w20 . I called the dealership and the service manager had no clue how much oil a JL got , they offered to fix the problem but it was easy to drop a quart out in the garage . Thanks again I would have never looked !

Just had my first oil change done at Brown's Sterling, VA. Mentioned to only have 5qts put in, and they listened. Paperwork shows 5qts 0w20.

Service Advisor said I'd be charged for 6qts even if they only put in 5qts... It was done under the Jeep Wave, so it didn't matter. At pick-up, he said they "verified" that I was correct in asking for 5qts.

This is still happening?!?!? It is 100% unacceptable that Jeep hasn't fixed this issue yet. I personally complained to the CEO's assistant and went back and forth with her over the issues I had with a similar experience in NJ. I had to argue with the dealer to even drain and replace the oil with the proper amount. How is this even occurring in 2019? They are going to end up adding a bright yellow oil cap to these or something to stop this from occurring. I wish someone made custom jeep oil caps and you could order a bright colored one with custom font that says "5 quarts only, this isn't a JK!!"

Maybe the problem stems from the fact that many service managers (not all) are jaded, underpaid (at least in their minds) know-it-alls who think customers are clueless idiots?
