Along with being Jeep Wrangler enthusiasts, we also happen to be avid Bass Fishermen (and women). Rather than trying to stuff our fishing rods inside of our new JLUS, we'd love to find a solution that would allow us to carry them externally on top of the jeep. Any suggested equipment for this out there ???

I purchased a .5 ton utility trailer from Harbor Freight. Assembled and wired it so far. Final plan is to use the side wood rails to mount 9' sections of 6" PVC, cap one end and have a screw on removable cap at the other end. Attach this to the outer side of the rail and call it a day. I'm putting .5" pressure treated lumber on as my deck. Then I am building a pool noodle caddy on the deck for my kayak.

My fly rods are 9ft , the back seat is always down, so I just lay them down and they just fit, not quite touching the windshield . I suppose I could get a piece of PVC and attach it to my roof rack, break down the rods and stickem inside. Too much effort. Your 7 and 8 ft rods have a lot more clearance than mine , plus when you get where you're going , you just grab them and go.

I just came back from the Rubicon trail, I laid my poles between my Kayaks on top of some swimmers noodles and it worked fine.. no issues easy to grab using a couple bungy cords.. I like the idea of PVC, but it may be over kill for my needs.

Just don't do what I did, and lose your fly Rod (never to be seen again!) on a bumpy Colorado road...

I'm jelly. My kayak that I fish from is lime green. Love the color. The Mrs. overruled me getting a jeep to match. Now that I have my Punk'n she confessed that she didn't think I was 1. Serious about getting a Jeep and 2. getting Mojito. A yeah. But I'm happy with Punk'n. Not boring white, black, grey or red.

Well I wanted a 2 door white boring JL :) but my young girls told me "no dad... Mojito 4 door or nothing " .. Girls always win in my house :)

So I guess I have to "suffer"... :)

as far as the Jeep matching.. that was a complete fluke thanks to Costco... $600 for 2 was an easy choice :) lots of fun to boot..

I don't think there is anything "bumpier" than the Rubicon trail :)

If you look closely at the photos you can see my solution. I use the ski / fishing rod holder from Rhino Rack. It works great for me but doesn't protect the rods from the elements. They are lockable and come in two sizes. They clamp down on the rods and hold them in place with rubber grooves. I had to get the narrow size in order for it to fit between my Hullavator kayak cradles, but they have a wider one that holds more as well. The smaller size can hold 4 spin/casting rods comfortably.
