Just curious why they won’t offer a manual transmission with the diesel...is it because it would need a redesigned heavier duty clutch than the 3.6?

R&D not worth the minuscule demand. I’m happy that I was able to get a manual at all...

I agree. Too bad though. I would’ve thought FCA would’ve had a clutch from a diesel truck that would’ve fit but I’m probably thinking too simplistically. As you said I’m glad to get a manual at all.

From what I understand, it’s more than the clutch in the current 6MT that can not reliably withstand 480 ft-lbs (or even 440 for that matter) and FCA does not have one in their lineup that both fits the JLU platform and the 3.0 without serious added R&D. After driving the 3.6 6MT for a year now, I’m not really impressed with it as an off-roading transmission to be honest. As much as my heart will always prefer to row my own, modern autos, the ZF 8spd being one of the best, have a lot of objective advantages over a variety of terrain compared to a manual. The sub-par 6MT mated to the 3.6 only serves to widen the gap.

That stinks. Although if memory serves me right Ram even go rid of all manual options in their trucks.

Just speculation, but with as well as the 8-speeds autos work - and that they can greatly improve fuel economy over the manuals, I'd bet FCA would want to drop manuals in favor of increased corporate fuel economy averages.

They found a middle ground by offering a manual with one of the 4 planned engine options to appease the purists who will never buy another new wrangler if the manual option can’t be checked.

You're exaggerating with faulty data. The combined EPA rating of JLs & JLUs with 3.6 and auto are 20 & 20, respectively; with manual they are 20 & 19. (There are no 2.0s with manual, so we can't compare those.) Spending $2000 on the auto to save 0-5% in fuel (maybe $100 a year) is not economical.
I know the auto lovers will come on here and say it's not like it used to be and the new 8spd will blow your skirt up and give you a happy ending, but the numbers just aren't there. I'm getting 23 avg this summer in city/burbs with a JLU and manual.

I was happy to just get it with the 3.6. I knew waiting to see if it would come with the 3.0 was going to be a waiting game of futility. I'm sure the auto is better off road but I still love rowing my own until I can't.
