Also there may have been a time when live axles had a slight advantage - at least in longevity and serviceability - with a true spindle, wb hub, bearings and press-in races, and lockouts (damn ya remember those things you used to have to get out and turn?).

If nothing else these live axles of old were true full floaters and you could limp off the trail even with a shattered stub shaft, just unlock that hub and roll on.

In contrast most unit bearings need the stub shaft and axle nut torqued to hold the bearing together.

With unit bearings now being the standard everywhere, any such advantage is extinct.
You can drive with the stub shaft pulled. Just out a rag in the axle tube so you don’t loose fluid. I do wish we had locking hubs still.

Solid axle tie rod’s are still much stronger than ifs. So are the rest of the steering components. You can find multiple videos of ifs rigs hardly doing anything serious and folding the tires in. On stock size tires. Rack and pinion with 37’s are no bueno.

Also, don’t forgot about flex. Ifs has nothing on solid axles there!

IFS bronco will be a joke and huge mistake by Ford.

If that's what it looks like no thanks. I don't like the look of the body.

It's an OJ Bronco with Rapto Flairs. Not sure if its real or a render, but pretty sure that's not the new design.

I was a die hard Ford fan until my 2013 Explorer. I have a love hate relationship with it. It's a nice quiet road trip mobile that has had an unfair share of issues. I joke that it was built the Friday before tbe 4th of July. Ford did work with me on it and we still have it.
We still have 4 other Fords. 01 F250, 84 Bronco II, 01 ZX2 and a 07 Edge. The F250 with the 7.3 is sticking with me for the long haul. I got it new in 01, and it's been the best vehicle I've owned so far

I was holding out for the new Bronco, but gave up. They keep pushing it out. Teasing it.
I hope I'm wrong, but doubt it will be SFA.
I read recently that it was not testing well with Focus Groups and "the general public doesn't have the same wants the hardcore Bronco owner would". I doubt there will be a v8 either. All pipe dreams.

I'm happy with my 19 JLUR. I feel I made the right decision and welcome the competition. There's some rumor of a GMC Jimmy being reintroduced too, but GM will fall flat on their face as usual.

If you want to buy a Ford, buy a Ford.
If you want to buy a Jeep, buy a Jeep

A Wrangler will always look like a Wrangler, you can't say that about any other vehicle.
Fords styling is straight up meth smoking whacko shit...WTF must everything on the road be Ugly in 2019

I'll drive my Handsome Jeep, you can drive whatever mutated diarrhea squirt you want.
the 60 Bronco was a pretty nice looking 4x4 esp for the era.
Wrangler is owned by FCA and could be owned by a Chinese company or Nissan in a few years. ITs good to have options, both to push the brancd you prefer to better and to help with pricing options

The "gears" being weaker? No, sorry. A ring and pinion is a ring and pinion, all other things being equal.

Axles vulnerable? Eh, that's a stretch. It's true most CV's aren't as strong as u-joints but CV's can be built to be extremely strong for a given application. While the half-shafts may be exposed, they angle up to the center of the vehicle and ground clearance is very good.

CV's are typically weakest at extreme angles, but so are u-joints (ie steering at full lock, under load)

Other components....that's nicely vague.

The ubiquitous D30 is not a beacon of strength. The 186 may be a tiny bit better, I haven't studied the specs. FCA went to a larger front end for the Rubi's.....I'm assuming GM did *something* on the ZR2s for the front locker (I again haven't studied the specs) and I'm assuming Ford will also take a "step up" if they offer a front locker. With a factory warranty you'd be stupid to not, as a manufacturer.

Also strength is relative....with IFS there is no housing to bend (a not uncommon problem on the JKs at least)

I'm not arguing in favor of IFS, merely saying when the axle assy is sized proportional to the vehicle weight and hp strength is mostly a wash - a SFA simply performs better for medium and low speed trail work due to the nature of physics that govern our world.
Disagree, lots of info on ifs bei vs SFAbut that's ok. Your sold on IFS, go for it.

Yup, If those believe different they can certainly go IFS. Again unless they do a unicorn IFS the bronco just wont be taken seriously.

I love that Bronco, always wanted one.
Same here but it has to be bigger. The reason I sold my TJ was it was just too small for what I wanted to do with it. I cant believe what they are getting for them now. A guy at work has had one for years and he always thought he was silly to put so much money into it. He doesn't feel so silly now. lol

Just my thoughts on this. I believe that what the insider calls the "Rock Monster" will be the Bronco Raptor. It will be IFS, just like all other Broncos, but will have a front and rear locker. Possibly some lower gears. The "Maverick" is probably a reference to the baby Bronco. Before the Escape there was a small SUV called Maverick in Europe. It was kind of nice actually, Diesel 5 speed with low range and 2 doors.

I have owned couple of Fords and I am not interested in them anymore . If I wouldn't own a Jeep I would go and get an import even though I like to support North American manufacturing.

The GM body has me cracking up. It's almost like the engineers who built it don't want to claim it.
Several things about this tell me that this is Ford's way of quashing rumors without really telling/showing us anything.

Too many clueless people whining about how ugly the hacked up Ranger body mule was -- so they put a top hat on it that was obviously not representative of what would be used for production -- they even left the badges on it to make sure.

The Colorado body and the Everest also put it to scale, so people stop trying to claim it will be full size, even though Ford has repeatedly said it would share a platform with the Ranger. They staged it in front of a big Ford R&D sign and escorted it with a Ford vehicle with close sequential manufacturer license plate to make sure people know its a Ford test mule and not the proper inheritor of the Chevy Blazer name.

Just quoting part of the post. I also thought about waiting for the Bronco, also decided to go ahead and get a 2019 JLR. Not enough information on the Bronco, losing faith that it won't be a generic SUV. I don't need a hardcore rock crawler either. And if they do it properly, I can always look at getting one a few years after it is released. The kinks will be (should be) known and worked out. A performance trim/model may be available. At least I am not waiting on something that may end up being an empty Ford pipedream. I'll drive and enjoy my JL until the Bronco is official/announced. And then probably a few years after that. And then, maybe, possibly, get one. But by that time, we may be waiting to see a midlife JL upgrade. But it would be easier to buy JL upgrades now if I knew Fords future.
