First timer at the jamboree on Drummond Island this past weekend. It was awesome! Great trails, great people, and fantastic guides. LOTS of water and mud. My mostly-stock JLR did really well.

Here's a few pics of me coming down the steps at Marble Head, going through Connor's Hole (my 10 year old son said, "we're driving through a river!"), and a few others for good measure.

Reward Mine, Inyo mountains California. Drive through service available!

Getting there is fairly easy on an old un-maintained road that goes from beat up pavement to beat up gravel, the last 1/4 mile to the entrance is 4x4 territory, with a couple of 4-low sections. A stock Jeep could make it up but might take some underside damage on a few rocky areas you have to cross.

Once you get past the short rough area you get to the entrance of the mine.

A quick clearance check and its down into the hole, if your not too scared...

At the bottom of this decline there's a 90 degree left turn, pure blackness beyond that as you continue deeper into the middle of this mountain. All pictures following were taken with headlights, flashlights, or cell phone camera flash. Turn everything out and the complete lack of any natural light is a little bit unnerving.

Old explosive store room, as with everything California vandals have been here as well.

After several declines, a couple of inclines and many turns, end of the road, at least for driving. We continued on foot for about another 1000' to where the main tunnel ends.

Here's an spot in the roof of the shaft where someone was chasing a quartz vein.

20190617_120413_zpsfckl6lqv.jpg

Luckily there are a few spots to turn around where there used to be large shafts, that have been long ago intentionally collapsed because they are dangerous. Got turned around (after realizing how pitiful the JL's backup lights are and back up lighting aftermarket mods are now higher on the list) and back into the light. You can drive around 1/2 mile underground, seems like alot further when you are doing it, and there are a couple of walking size only tunnels as well. Everything dead ends at some point and there is only one main tunnel so it's kind of impossible to get lost in there. Amazing trip. After exiting we explored some other mining ruins in the area and let little desert dog chase some lizards.

You take us along on some nice trips, Jim. Thanks!

Wish our pups could get together for a good bunghole sniffing and a romp sometime. I reckon they’d get along

No way in Hell I’m going in that mine, though. I got claustrophobic when I saw your Jeep at the entrance.

If someone says I have to go in a cave or die, they’d best be ready for a deadly fight.

Ain’t going in no cave.

wow great write up on the mine. It is a wonderful experience. Took my Girl friend and her mom through the old mine a few weeks back after i got down from Mount Whitney and meet them in lone pine. After seeing those pictures i am glad i didn't try to drive any further. my my girls mom didn't wanna try to walk in with just the flash lights.

Your very welcome, i'm no professional photographer or nothing, just cell phone pics. But I know alot of people don't have the opportunity to get to some of the places we have out here, so i'm always thinking of what I can share here with others when i'm out enjoying my trips. I totally get the claustrophobia, we all have something that scares the bejezus out of us, mine is large open bodies of water. Little Jack gets along with pretty much every other dog he's ever met, he's a great little dog and our constant companion. I'll keep em coming as long as people still like to see them.

Thanks, i was truly in awe the entire time, it's one of those really cool things I knew i had to go do, who knows how much longer it will be available for public access and still safe. Glad you got to experience it as well!

Yep. You got it. I can bob around in my 12’ kayak in 6’ swells. 2 miles off-shore, fishing in the Gulf without a worry in the world.

All day.

Just don’t expect me to crawl into that dark scary space under my house.

Ain’t happening.

So we took a family vacation last week from Denton TX to Ouray Colorado. Our plan was to drive Imogene pass & Ophir pass, however there was so much snow, we could only go to the Ophir pass summit; Imogene pass was closed. As an alternate, we took the Last Dollar Road from North of Ouray into Telluride which was so beautiful. We are planning on going back, but this time after the snow melts! Here are our pics....enjoy!

Thanks for sharing the pics. My wife and I’s favorite place to escape the Texas heat. This years snowfall was incredible. Last year it was dry as a bone.
