I'm going to be installing a 2.5-3 inch lift on my Rubicon, and I'm trying to finalize what tires to run. I've settled on Mastercraft Courser MXT's, but am unsure on going with 35-12.5-17 or 315-70-17. The 315s are about $32 cheaper per tire and don't want to spend money for no reason.

Both are a shade under 35 for overall diameter, and both weigh 64 lbs. The 315s have a load range of D, while the 35s are E. The measured rim width on the 315s is 9.5, while the 35's is 10. These will be mounted on Procomp 69 series 17x9 wheels (7069-7973), so I don't know if that makes a huge difference.

I'm leaning toward the 315s, but figured I ask some people that might have experience first. Thanks

If you really want to save money, skip the lift and get the 315s. Rubicons don’t need a lift to fit them in the first place. If you lift, I think you’ll probably want to go to 37s.

The 315s will also ride better since they have a softer side wall.

Awesome, thanks guys. I'll look into 37s. I was just concerned that the added weight and size would require me to re-gear. I'm trying to find a balance between offroad capability and onroad smoothness, and thought the 35s would be the best balance. I'll keep researching.

The Mastercraft MXT is a great tire. I had them on a previous jeep.

With a 2.5" lift I'd go 37x12.50r17. You could also stay stock height and go with the 315/35s.

This is great information. I'll focus on getting 37s. I'm looking at the new Rustys 3 inch lift or the Metalcloak right now in terms of lift. The Metalcloak is clearly the best, but the Rustys cost is hard to overlook.

Size wise these will be so close you probably won't see the difference. The biggest difference will be the load range. On a Jeep that's a moot point, so I'd get the cheaper 315's.
The measured rim width is minor. The overall diameter of a tire will remain essentially unchanged due to the steel belts in them. However the final width will be affected by the rim width. The common factor is 0.2" of tire width for every 1/2" of rim width. Therefore, if the mfg says a tire is 12.0" wide on 10" wide rim and you put it on a 9" wide rim, it will be a 11.6" wide tire on your rim. So for your particular application the 315's will be 0.2" narrower than they specify, and the 35's will be 0.4" narrower than they specify. As previously mentioned the diameter of each will be essentially whatever they say it is (IIRC the difference is something like 0.01 per 1/2 or something minor like that) .
