Jeep Rubicon 2019
  • I recently purchased a Jeep Rubicon 2019 model. It was the exact match of everything I ever wanted in a Jeep and I finally had the right timing and everything for it to make the purchase. This is in late February 2019. I drive the vehicle off the lot to head home. I lived an hour away at the time from the SoCal dealership. The check engine light came on as I hit the highway. I did not think much of it as I thought maybe the gas cap just wasn’t screwed on all the way. In the morning I had to go back to the dealer to turn in my title for the vehicle I traded in. The check engine light still remained on... This vehicle had under 100 miles on it and now only two highway trips and less than a dozen hours under my ownership. They sent it to get serviced immediately and had to keep it over night for diagnostics. In this time, I almost wasn’t even offered a rental but eventually managed to get one.
  • The next day, I receive a phone call from the service manager saying they need to order a “new valve body”. This was a shock since the original isn’t an “old” one and it passed for a working vehicle to be sold to me. I’m not worried about cost at this point because rental is covered and the warranty is not only covered for new purchase but I also purchased six year full coverage since this is a huge investment into my favorite Jeep I’ve come across. Estimated arrival of new valve body was 2/25/19. About a week later from the manufacturer to dealer. I get a phone call the next week. The parts been delayed.
  • The part has been delayed week by week and is now delayed until 4/25/19. Two months anticipated without the vehicle I am already paying car notes on. Needless to say my frustration was real the whole month of March with every individual delay and even more so in April. I am a travel nurse by profession and now I am leaving for work into a different county in the middle of all of this to add extra stress.
  • I finally get someone to help me escalate this up the chain of command because I’m almost at the point of getting legal counsel for arbitration since the manufacturer keeps delaying the part to the dealer to get replaced. Upon the first couple of people who get involved higher up I finally get some news other than parts being delayed.
  • There is going to be a buy back of the vehicle and I will be contacted within the next couple of weeks regardless of if the part is in on time or not. I am glad for some news but I have zero experience with this. My question is, will I be fully covered and not required to pay a cent more? Will I be able to have the exact same vehicle replaced for the buy back since it was literally everything I wanted? How lengthy and difficult is this process? Is this common? Can I ask for extra money even? I have found little Jeep info on this outside of a thread from 2018. Thank you for any input as I am constantly working and trying my best to avoid as little headache, added stress, and definitely loss of money, as possible. Thanks!

Doc... Duh.
I had a Pontiac Aztec bought back under my states lemon law years ago. I know. Make fun of that purchase all you wish.

It was bought back including everything I paid (aka the interest on the loan).

I highly recommend you review your state’s lemon laws. If this qualifies then you might be owed not just a new car but compensation for the interest you’ve paid on a car you didn’t have.

If I was you I’d want a new car exactly what I was promised and the interest of any payments I made reimbursed. Alternatively a full refund plus interest and then either rebuy or walk away.

If you feel like you’re not getting what you deserved contact your state attorney general. They will usually assist you. Ohio did mine at the time.

It should be fairly straightforward process by a third party and you can order the exact replacement of the Jeep you currently have. As for getting extra money, no, that’s not going to happen.

Make fun of you? I don’t think so. Walter White from Breaking Bad drove that car.

Really sorry to hear this. Seams like they could have taken the part off the production line. I know that is much easier said than done. I have been reading a few more stories like this. I try to keep it in perspective though, as Jeep builds around 18k Jeeps a month and have many trouble free vehicles out their. Keep us updated on how it all turns out. Good Luck!

Do not hire an attorney if you want FCA /stericycle to deal with you. I can tell you after picking up my 19 JLUR yesterday after issues on my 18 started in December it’s a tedious process but with patience they’ll make it right especially if they already agreed to buy the vehicle back

What he said. Also...be courteous during the process. It will get you a lot further. Press your rep when you need to but in the end, be kind. You’ll be surprised how much more willing people are to work with you.

And make sure you write very, very specific emails multiple times. Cannot tell you how many emails I’ve written over the past few weeks especially - no one wants to be specific but they have to be. Get definitive answers in writing to everything

Be nice, but don't let them play with you. You have already waited too long. You may want to consult an attorney just to see what recourse you actually have and how long it would take to get restitution.

For us it wasn’t a Jeep but another major auto manufacturer. And we are in California. The manufacturer agreed to the buy back, a third party company took over to facilitate and within a couple short weeks we were at the dealer getting a check for the lemon car. It was quick painless and very fair. The dealership already had our replacement brought up from Southern California as we requested and I drove away with it the same day they took the other one back.

Whatever you do, DON'T involve an attorney in a lemon law case where the manufacturer already agreed to a buy back. Most states make lemon law disputes easy to resolve without an attorney. Only use them as a last resort!!!

Make sure to check out what happens with your loan. Your car loan is based on a specific VIN, etc. so if that thing is vaporized back over to FCA and you get a new car, will there be a requirement to take out a new loan on the new car, after paying off the loan on the old lemon car?
