I am looking for information and ideas on how to securely and safely carry an extra 3 gallons of fuel while exploring backroads such as the Yukon's Dempster Hwy up to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean.

To be wilderness prepared, I would like to mount a reserve fuel container (approx. 3 gal.) on our Wrangler JLU. I have seen ones like the Rock Slider that use a nylon strap to mount to the spare tire (https://www.rockslideengineering.co...d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/c/ac-tr-102_-_2_1_1.jpg) but I feel this lacks security when the vehicle is unattended.

I also ruled out the MORryde Side Mount (https://turn5.scene7.com/is/image/Turn5/J104170?wid=810&hei=608) for aesthetic reasons.

The approach I like best is Rotopax Tailgate Mount, such as this one for the JK (https://rotopax.com/var/images/product/1000.1000/IMG_6131.jpg). Unfortunately, Rotopax does not have one for the JL nor do they have an ETA available.

I also like the Rotopax Tire Mount system that they have for the JK (https://rotopax.com/var/images/product/500.500/image_70.png) but this, in its current mount location, would not be compatible with the JL's backup camera. If they or someone else makes one with a slightly higher mounting position, that too would work for us.

Ideas and suggestions are very welcome.

Iā€™m looking for a similar solution for trips to Deadhorse, Tuk, and McCarthy. Iā€™ll probably mount my hi-lift to the AEV rear bumper/tire carrier when they finally release it, then mount the rotopax to the hi-lift. If AEV has a similar fuel caddy as their JK system I might consider that too.

When are you planning to go to Tuk?
We're parking our motorhome in Dawson City sometime in the first half of July and then driving the Jeep only up to Tuk. We'll make the Tuk excursion a 5-6 day journey.
Rotopax is planning to make a rack but they have no firm ETA yet but say they hope to have it out by June when we hit the road.

I have one mounting plate that I made that accepts a Rotopax mount and 3.5 gallon can. It's my prototype. I will sell it for $75. Newly painted plate and the hardware has been used but has no issue

This is what I did:

I created a reserve gas tank that holds about 4 gallons of gas. It sits nicely up under the body between the frame rails. Itā€™s set up so that it automatically fills with each fill up. If the main tank runs out of gas I can pump gas from the reserve to the main tank by a fuel pump that is activated by one of the auxiliary switches on the dash. I also put in a ā€œStahlbus Drain Valveā€ so I can pull gas directly from the tank if I need to transfer it to another vehicle or just need access to gas. Attached are a few pictures of the setup.

Cool system but a little more complex and costly than I had in mind for my rig.

It depends on whether the EPA destroys all hope of seeing the 3.0 this year. Iā€™ve got 4000 miles on my 3.6 and hope to keep it well under 10k to minimize the financial pain of transitioning to 3.0. Iā€™d much rather do the trips to Deadhorse and Tuk with the 3.0 and might convince myself to do them in ā€˜20 pending 3.0 delivery.

My plan is a 14 gallon boat gas tank from Amazon (about 100.00) strapped to my roof rack.
