Clearly, the JL is my first Jeep. And maybe it’s common knowledge among previous Jeepers. But honestly, I was shocked to open my hood only to learn there was no illumination whatsoever in the engine compartment!

I’m even more surprised that I can’t find a single thread anywhere on the forum discussing this situation and what people have done to remedy it. Surely I’m just not working the search function properly. Can anyone help me out here?

I have found one kit over @extremeterrain to add manually operated lights. But I can’t find any write ups or videos of any JL owners installing them:
https://www.extremeterrain.com/kc-hilites-cyclone-led-under-hood-lighting-kit-8717-yj-tj-jk.html

I don’t mind being the first, but I’m awfully nervous about that hood liner, which seems like it’s not going to play nice with removal and reinstallation.

Can I get a little help / guidance here?

I’ve never owned a vehicle that didn’t have lighting under the hood. Literally every other vehicle made (that I know of) comes with at least a single crappy bulb so you can see at least a little in the dark.

But what do I know... all I can say for sure is that my JL is going to have some lights under the hood! I just hope I’m not the first person who has to figure out how to solve this issue.

I’ve had to install hood lighting in my FJ, Tacoma, F150, and mini. I’ve just gotten used to no hood lights, so it’s normal to me. I’m planning on installing it on the JL.

If you own a Jeep, you should be handy enough to install lighting or use a magnetic led light.

What type of vehicle have you driven in the past? Personally the only time I’ve seen stock tood lights has been on GM vehicles. Primarily the trucks. And some of the new F150s here in Canada. But I think that might be an option when buying brand new.

But I do agree that new vehicles ( Especially wranglers ) Should have under hood lighting as a standard thing.

My LJ came with an under hood light. My Volvo of the same year did not.

Let’s see... Acura NSX, AMG Mercedes, Yukon Denali, and a few others along those lines. :) So maybe I’m just spoiled. Hehe

I feel like I’m going to have to end up being the guinea pig for the under hood lighting on the JL since I can’t find any other documentation...

Haha fair enough my friend. Some higher end rides right there so that makes sense why you’d had it.

Either you or myself will be. Had to check under the hood after nightshift last night and got quite annoyed having to hold the flashlight in my mouth. So I’m putting some serious thought into doing some hood lighting pretty quick here. The liner is probably gonna be a huge pain in the ass.

Looks like CJ Off-Road has an install video, just not on a JL.

@JohnP

Curious... What do you think you would be doing under the hood at night on your JL that would require lighting?

Suggest you buy a decent LED flashlight. That makes far more sense to me.

A light would be nice but to be perfectly honest the JL is not like the vehicles I grew up with where you could easily change the belt, battery or similar on the side of the road, vehicles produced now require high tech equip to tune and repair not to mention specific tools so for me the most I would ever need is a drop light which I keep in the garage and an LED flash light I keep in the glove box.

I guess having a light under the hood would be nice to have so we could see on the side of the road what we most likely can’t fix

Buy a KC Hilites Cyclone light. I wired the light to one of my factory Aux switches. Works like a champ!

This goes on sale every other week. I picked up three of them for $18.99 each. They’re awesome, and you can find bolts along the side of the engine bay to which the magnet will adhere. Also a must have for changing oil, as it simply sticks to the frame illuminating your drain plug or, better yet, your Fumoto valve.

Serendipity. This just arrived to my inbox: https://www.harborfreight.com/845-lumen-underhood-rechargeable-work-light-63990.html

$34.99 with coupon. Not sure if you can combine with 25% off? I’m going to try...
