San Juan NF is closed currently due to forest fires. Be sure to call ahead if you are planning a trip.

We were planning to visit the area the beginning of August with Mile Hi Jeep Club's All-4-Fun. They had to cancel it and move it to another location.
Thanks @tjeeper. I got back from Thailand today and we’re leaving for that area early Monday morning. I’ll spend some time tomorrow and check out which areas are closed. If Telluride is a bust, I’ll try to hit up what I missed towards Ouray and Lake City. Thanks again for the advice.

You’re welcome.

My little brother and I are at the Walmart in Montrose heading towards Ouray here in a minute. The San Juan forest is closed, but it looks like they’ve opened up Imogene and Ophir Pass. That’s where we’re headed first.

I’ll keep you in mind for San Diego. Thanks for the invite!

Good morning Jeep nerds!

I made it back from Thailand on the 16th and my little bro made it out to Colorado on the 17th. We took off from Pueblo West early in the morning and made it to Ouray. We decided to take Imogene to Telluride first, which took us right at 4 hours 45 minutes. We stop and take pictures everywhere we go.

The pictures don't do any of this scenery justice, but we all know that. There were a few creek crossings with optional bridges for when the water is too high. There's certainly an insane amount of drop offs where a mistake can kill you. That's part of the fun with this trails out here though. It's not technical and just about everything on Imogene can be done with any 4x4 vehicle. There is one section as you climb to the top that I wouldn't recommend full size trucks to try, but the majority of it is no problem at all.

We're just now getting up to go check out the big waterfall at the bottom of Black Bear (Still Closed) and then do Ophir. Ophir is still open despite having the San Juan forest completed closed. They left it open for through traffic only; no camping, fishing, or long stays of any kind. If there's time today, we're going to attack Poughkeepsie Gulch. It finally opened while I was in Thailand. I will update again tomorrow morning with the pics from today.

Telluride is a pretty town, but it's stupid expensive out here. Hotels start at $130 or so and go up to $500+ a night!! Fuel is over $1 more per gallon than Montrose. I filled up last night and it was $4.31/gallon. I can understand that it takes a lot to get fuel into a little mountain town, but damn!

Enjoy the pics from yesterday. Thanks everyone!

Good afternoon,

I finally made it back to NC. I flew back from Grand Junction, which is where I left the JL. She'll sit in storage until the MOAB trip next month. Plane tickets are quite affordable to go back and forth and decided to store the Jeep inside. That cost me $120, but that cost is worth the peace of mind that I hold the only keys to get to it. That and the sun won't be beating down on her while sitting in a dusty parking lot.

The Colorado portion of the trip is complete. I wish a few more trails were open, but due to the Class 3 Closure of the San Juan Forest, I wasn't able to do all that I wanted. Maybe next year.

My little bro and I woke up after staying in Telluride and hit up the Bridal Veils Falls. You can drive up Black Bear Pass up to the Power Plant. At that point it becomes one way and the pass is closed, anyway. After checking out the waterfall and the bottom portion of Black Bear Pass, we cruised down to Ophir Pass. The pictures are starting to all blend together, but I promise you the trails all have they're own character and are truly different.

Enjoy the pictures. Thanks for letting me share these with everyone. This is an epic journey to take and it'd be a shame to not share it.

We completed Imogene Pass, the bottom portion of Black Bear Pass, and Ophir Pass during this last couple days in Colorado.

It would be awesome for some Forum Members to join me in MOAB next month!!! Plenty of time to prepare.

Thank you!!

The JL is put to bed for a month... Took a pic of the Mesa outside Grand Junction as we took off. Gonna be badass next month when MOAB time comes. MOAB is only an hour and a half from Grand Junction.

I can't begin to tell you how jealous I am. I know I've said it before. That's bucket list material. Guess I'll have to etch out time in the next couple of years to make a similar trip. Kudos to you and your bro for making it.

Thanks man! My little brother made the drive from MN with his Duramax. He's hanging out with our sister in Pueblo West for a week and decided to come with me for a couple days. About 2 weeks before I got my JL is when I said screw it. I'm just going to make this happen even if I have to eat bread and water at home. Lol. It's not that bad, but it's definitely going to require some financial management to make this happen, but it's very doable.

what holds the windshield down...doesnt look safe
Gravity held it down for me just fine up to 45 mph. I wouldn't go above that without the windshield straps, which I need to buy before heading to MOAB next month. Otherwise, it was nice to wheel with the window down and it's very easy to lower.
