Knocked out a tough hike today with Mr. Business, and Carla. Carla was like why do you always pick hikes with big elevation gains? Like 1204 ft of elevation gain in 2 1/2 miles. It was a steep hike to say the least.

Carla was having a good time in the beginning as was Mr. Business.

She was cursing me under her breath right here while looking at a skull and cross bones carved in the trail.

The views from up top over the valley were a sight worth the hike.

At the top of the pass, we took a quick break by the flag and Carla signed the logbook.

During the hike I got the call from the shop that my Jeep was done. Time to break in the gears. I dropped it off on Wednesday, and was told it would be done on Friday. Went to pick it up on Friday and the guy doing the gears was like, I had a vehicle that I needed to finish so I could work on yours and he stated that he was already almost 4 hours over what he thought it should take due to a broken
. He states that he plans to work on it into the night to get it done so I can pick it up on Saturday. Tell him no big deal, have plans on Saturday, I will pick it up Saturday afternoon. He calls me and says where is the lug nut socket? I forgot to put it in the Jeep, as it’s in my tool bag. Tell him, hey, I am over a 100 miles away. I was not able to get him the lug nut socket until two in the afternoon. I apologize and said Monday late afternoon will work.

We picked the Jeep up after dark. Set the trip meter so I can count off the gear break in miles. Funny, I snapped this as I pulled into our base camp. Funny thing is I can get great mileage when the Jeep is not loaded down and I am babing it.

I'll apologize in advance if you've already answered this, but what mapping app do you use to know that you're on public land/trails once you head off-road? My wife and I are planning a trip southwest this summer and would like to try getting off the beaten path.

I use Gaia. Gaia has a map layer that will show you private property, public land, national and state forests, boundaries lines and so on. It is easy to see if you are on public land vs private. You should also be aware that there are many times where it is private property on both sides of the trail/forest road. So just because it show that it is private properties, does not mean you can’t drive through. Always respect areas that have signs that say private property and or locked gates. There maybe a gate, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue, if the gate is locked, turn around. If it is unlocked, open the gate, go through and close the gate.

This pic is zoomed way out so you can see how things maybe colored to show you the type of property and how it is labeled. This is thousands of square miles of land.

Jeep Wrangler JL Wandering the Southwest for Four or Five months of Wheeling. 1678197044340

Then this picture shows you zoomed in so you can see a couple trails and how it changes from California state land to BLM land.

Jeep Wrangler JL Wandering the Southwest for Four or Five months of Wheeling. 1678197273310

So in this pic, you can see the light green is private properties, then as you go north, you head onto public.

I hope this helps. Gaia is a great tool. I have a shareable google map with over 200 points of interest for out west. They are cool places to visit, hike and off road at. It looks like this.

The cool thing with this map is it’s on google maps so it is super easy to navigate and if you click on a pin, it will show you pictures of what you can expect to see and make it easy to navigate to it. I do this so as we drive around, I know when I might be close to somewhere that is cool to see.

So time to break in the gears in the jeep. A 205 mile run out in the desert to the combat village. Fifteen to twenty five mph. Very smooth flat trail. In 4h.

This is our third attempt to explore the combat village. Last time the Danish Special Forces were using it. Today it was empty and we were the only ones there.

Only foot travel is allowed for access by the public.

So when we headed out yesterday, we planned to camp. I found a trail that dead ends at a mountain and tucked in to it and set up camp.

Every once in a while we pass things like this randomly.

We got the tent and attached it to the Jeep , cooked dinner. We enjoyed the transition from day to night over dinner.

We like the tent. Easy to set up, easy to attach to the Jeep and theunattached from the Jeep. The tent does not need to attached to the jeep as it will also free stand without the Jeep.

Arizona has some colorful sunsets. When the sun sinks low enough to light up the clouds from the bottom as it hides behind the mountains.

I did not. But I did get injured….. Not bad though. Dropped my coffee and slid down the side of a mountain for a bit trying to carry Mr. Business back to the jeep after a jumping cholla cactus attached him.

A quick definition of the Jumping Cholla cactus.

Jumping Cholla: Watch out for these ones. Although the Jumping Cholla is also known as the Teddy Bear Cholla, there is nothing cuddly about it – please DO NOT hug it! The branches of a jumping cholla are easily detached, so if you so much as lightly brush up against one, be prepared to walk away with something more than you started with. The needles of a jumping cholla are very painful to remove from skin even though they look (deceptively) furry.

So for the rest of the story. After a good night sleep in the back of the Jeep on the Deep Sleep air mattress that @19 JLUR Bright Whit3 so graciously hooked me up with.

We woke up to this.

After pulling the spines out of his body with pliers, I had to wrap him up in a blanket tightly, put a stick in his mouth so he could not close his mouth, hold him tightly and then Carla had to use pliers to pull the spines out of his lips, tongue and roof of his mouth. He is doing much better now.

We put him back in the jeep and he snuggled up in the blanket while we broke down camp.

Dang that dog can JUMP! I have to lift ours, she's old with 2 bad legs though. Glad everything worked out after the drive train (I'm pretty sure that's considered part of the drive train) mishap.

I would love to play paintball at Combat Village, looks AWESOME!

My 75lb English Pointer tried to pick up a cholla branch in December that was laying in the parking lot of the Pima Air Museum. He's got some big chompers, but fortunately, he's very compliant and gentle. Same deal. 2" long needles stuck in the roof of his mouth and lips.

I hate cholla cactus. When I used to ride the Mojave, I had to pull that stuff out of a lot of horses. Once you step out of the saddle, everybody else wants cholla removal service.

Dang that dog can JUMP! I have to lift ours, she's old with 2 bad legs though. Glad everything worked out after the drive train (I'm pretty sure that's considered part of the drive train) mishap.

I would love to play paintball at Combat Village, looks AWESOME!
It would be awesome for paint ball.

Mr . Business has 4paw drive. When we got him from the shelter, he was not able to jump into the Jeep. I run him about 5 times a week for one to three miles, and we have hiked him approximately 700 miles 5 1/2 months. He is very athletic now.

51 days and a wake up. :like:
51 days…. What is your plan?

1 hour after retirement?

1 day after Retirement?

1 week after retirement?

1 month?

Do you have a specific goal to accomplish in retirement? Me, I wanted to drink fresh brewed coffee on a mountain pass.
