Short Trip: Remote Nevada Guzzler Build

Took off to BFE Nevada last weekend to help Nevada Department of Wildlife build a big game guzzler (water catchment system and drinking trough)

Left Reno at about 2:30 on Friday, made it out to Soldier Meadows (black rock wilderness) by about 6:30pm. 50+ miles of twisty washboard roads.

Set up camp with the other volunteers and went to bed so we could be up around 5am.

Got up early and we headed out to the Guzzler site that was about 4 miles from camp up some decently rough roads. I’m always amazed that they can drag full size flatbed trailers where they do. I believe the NDOW guys lost 4 trailer tires on the way to the site and a tire on one of their trucks.

we finished the build around 1:30pm and it was about 103* out at that point.

So coincidently this project was located in my hunt unit for this year, so after we finished I went off to do some light scouting for a few hours.

Drover north along the Black Rock Wilderness, drove up to Summit Lake Indian Reservation and saw the lake, then headed back towards camp exploring a bit. Doesn’t seem like the right part of the unit for finding deer, but we’ll see. Headed back to camp for dinner and to watch the stars come out.

Woke up the following morning and helped pack the volunteer trailer then hit the road home. It was about 55 miles back to pavement over some less than pleasant roads. I’m glad I wasn’t in a 3/4 ton truck like most of the guys.

Hauled ass as best as we could, but deciddd to take a cut off onto the Black Rock Playa (yes, where burning man is hosted). This traded about 15 miles of twisty washboard for about 15 miles of smooth 55mph playa but goooood lord the dust was bad. Jeep is nasty inside and outside, and the trailer is even worse. Playa dust is no fun.

Anyway, fun trip overall. The build wasn’t too difficult even though it was hot as hell. Jeep rode well as usual. Did about 150 miles of dirt over the weekend, about 350 miles total trip. Nothing crazy.

Going to do an even longer trip this weekend and come in from a different direction, but this time with a roof, the dogs, and the wife.

Nice write up, I am going to have to make a trip up there in the jeep in the future. I think I will wait until the fall when the temps come down.
