Crane Pond, Schroon Lake, NY

Spent the day at Crane Pond, in the pharaoh lakes wilderness just north-northeast of Schroon Lake, NY. Trail to the lake was rutted out, variably muddy, with lots of leftover melting ice, and a water crossing that was only a couple feet deep. Quiet. Fish were NOT biting. Highly recommend this location, great trail fun for about 2-3 miles, kayak into campsites around the lake, all primitive, and away enough from town where you don’t see lights at night or hear anything but nature in the day.

Looks great. Is this an actual forest/ unmaintained road? Is there camping? Looks like it isn't too far from me. Might have to check it out at some point.

Yes, camping available, and the road is variable maintained, but only enough to keep it barely passable. I had to chop up a couple trees that fell across the path over the winter.

Excellent if you have kids. Nearly impossible to flip.

If it was just me, I prefer the Orukayak, tracks better and more supportive structure for longer paddles.

Nice place!
A newbie who's new to off road and camping here, my JLRU just got 1.5 inch lift and wheel spaced that's it...
Any suggestions for hitting that trail? Or for my first time off road trip. Thanks!

Nope. You’re good to go. A stock JKU Sahara did the trail with minimal issues, as did my JLUR when it was stock.

Just remember it’s in the middle of nowhere

that said, once covid passes, stop by sticks and stones for a good drink and some wood fired pizza or wings on the way out. Good place to eat.

Crane *pond* freshest water you can imagine. Campsites are totally primitive. If you are a first time camper, this probably isn’t your place to go overnight, but a day trip would be great. You’ll need a kayak to get to all but two of the campsites.

If I were you, I’d find an Airbnb in Schroon lake, and then drive out to crane pond for the day, kayak around, hike pharaoh mountain, etc.
