Is the map overlay stored in the system, or does it download like Google Maps?
If using Google Maps, and I get out of cell service, then the map won't load even though I still have GPS signal. (Yes, I can pre-download the Google maps IF I know where I am going, but often we are just taking dirt roads on a whim.)

Thought about getting separate Garmin, but if the maps are loaded in UConnect than they might suffice. (Not so much off-road trails, but back roads and MVUMs.)

The UConnect maps are stored in the system and updated periodically. Most backroads and even some driveways are programmed in. In the national parks it even shows some limited access service roads/trails that are not for everyone. I can't see why anyone would need a Garmin unless you are planning on hiking or some other way-offroad activity.
