Jeepers I'm looking for some suggestions. Every summer we do a 10 day camping, hiking, Jeep trip. I'm looking for suggestions on places to go. Normally we do Colorado but we want somewhere new. Looking for backcountry camping where there is the ability for a stock 4x4 to a mildly built Rubicon to get to. We set up base camp and explore from there. Multi overnight hike trips, day time wheeling, high alpine lake fishing. I'm not looking for your secret spot, just somewhere to start my search from experienced locals.
Thank in advance.
PS MUST BE DOG FRIENDLY

I live in PA, but one of my best buds from the Navy lives in Laramie. Every couple years, I drive out and we go camping. The Snowy Range is beautiful. If you’re on the other side, you have the Grand Tetons. You really can’t go wrong!

I would try the BigHorn mountains. South of Buffalo you have Crazy Woman Canyon which has fishing in the creek, and there are places to camp. Crazy Woman isn’t very long. There are side roads that you can take, and camping is allowed. Once you get up into the Bighorn mountains there are plenty of places to drive on and off road.

Red Grade Road just south of Sheridan is one of our favorite places to visit. There are a lot of creeks, and a large lake to fish in. Fishing in the creeks is great. Haven’t tried the lake yet. Lots of places to camp.

Just be sure to stay on the road or an approved trail. If your going to be camping in a tent bring protection. There are a lot of bears! As with any wild animal don’t get to close, especially between a cow moose and it’s calf. There are plenty of them up on Redgrade Road. Make sure you fill up before going up into the mountains.

Don’t show up too early in the year! If you do both places may be closed due to snow. Last year out first trip in early June to Crazy Woman was interesting since there was snow in most places. Got stuck once and had to dig the Jeep out. We couldn’t get all the way over Redgrade until the first week of July. Highway 14 just north of Sheridan has some beautiful country and great fishing. 14a up in the mountains (if it’s open) is a great drive with a lot of fishing too. Both have plenty of dirt roads and trails to explore.

One more place is Hazelton KC Loop. If you drive up through Crazy Woman you’ll come out on Hwy 16. Head west and you’ll run into Hazelton Road. It’s paved for about 8 miles I believe, then turns into dirt. It’s about an 8-9 hour trip till you get to the small town of KC. There is a great place to fish and camp about half way there. Also be sure to take the time to go to Hole in the Wall, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid hide out. It’s worth the drive. Just don’t get stuck in the ruts.

And yes, all the places are dog friendly!
