Recently picked up a 2020 Jeep Wrangler and was wondering if anyone here has hauled a dirtbike on the back with a dirtbike carrier? I was planning on getting a basic trailer hitch and using the dirtbike carrier from Harbor Freight. Wasn't sure how much clearance there was with the big spare tire on the back. Thanks!

Given my experience trying a few different bike rack options, you likely will need a hitch extender and/or a drop, depending on how the carrier is setup. Easy and affordable to do.

Cool, thanks for the input. I was wondering how the bike would fit with that big spare tire on the back. Looks like I can just get one of those extenders for it.

It took me a bit of trial and error and going to bigger tires complicated things with the spare. I’ve dealt with mountain and road bikes, not dirt bikes, but similar, of course. One issue was the rack fit and cleared the tire but the bike handlebars and pedals hit the spare. I tried a swing-away carrier, which worked great but (for me) was a real pain to deal with getting into the trunk often. In the end I got a spare relocation kit to move the spare up and got a bike rack that is deep enough to clear the depth of the tire.

Yeah I could see the problem being the handle bars getting in the way. The rest of the bike should clear with an extender. I guess I'll just have to try some different stuff out and see what works. Sounds like I'll need an extender of some sort though at a minimum.

Keep in mind that if you use an extender you are effectively increasing the tongue weight and dramatically increasing the torque on the receiver. Assuming tongue weight is roughly 10% of tow rating, that means you have 350 lbs of permissible tongue weight at the point where a tow ball would be. Now, add that extension and it's very likely that you'd be in excess of the rated tongue weight.

I just watched a few videos on Youtube where guys had racks on the back of their Wranglers. It looks like there is plenty of clearance without a hitch extender. My buddy has a rack, so maybe I'll test it out first with that before I buy one. Would rather just use a carrier than get a trailer for just one bike.

I have a hitch rack for my bike and it definitely did not work with the spare tire in 2 ways. First, the tank would hit the tire, but I have a larger than stock tank on my dirtbike. Second, the bike would have to be loaded on rear tire first because the handlebars would not go around the tire unless you leaned the bike over about 30 degrees while loading. But these are just my particular results. Your results may vary. I ended up getting a trailer.

Maybe I'll just have to take the spare off when I cart the bike around. Sounds like if I did that I'd be home free for sure.
