I'm considering buying a diesel JL, but I'm (a little) hesitant due to the newness of the power train application in the Wrangler. Conventional wisdom says to avoid year #1, but is that truly a meaningful issue? Obviously, I'm weighing impatience against prudence.

Thoughts?

The smart money says let us early adopters scare up the new-powertrain gremlins. Some of us have been waiting over a decade for this rig and weren’t going to add another 1-2 years to mitigate those small but admittedly serious risks.

Hasn't the diesel option been available overseas for a while?

A diesel option has been.
This is a new motor.

OP, plenty of discussion on the forum. Read up.

I thought that motor has been in production and used in Ram Trucks for years already?

We get the 2.2 diesel in the U.K./Europe and probably other export markets get that too.

In the U.K., at least, diesel sales have plummeted in recent years as consumer sentiment has turned against them so I think it’s unlikely we will get the 3.0.

I wouldn't order it w/o test driving one before.
I was planning on taking a test drive (I'm most concerned about noise), but that brings up a good point, everyone who has ordered already are taking something of a leap of faith.

It all depends on your level of risk tolerance. You could let the guinea pigs (ER I MEAN EARLY ADOPTERS) work out the kinks for you. A brand new Italian diesel? Let them find out how it fares, then buy it with a solid track record. It may rock, it may suck.

I'm a risk taker, so I bought the 2.0 4-popper Italian motor. But only after it'd been out a year, and it didn't have a 6k diesel add-on price either. So far so good. But I'm not expecting 150k miles out of this before I trade it in.

I'll get flamed, but I'd say wait a year. It ain't going anywhere.

I can't disagree with anything that you've said. I waited to order a 2021 to allow any bugs to be worked out. That said, the pandemic liked quelled any major update efforts to improve the 2021s.
