Back in the mid/late 2000s my dad bought a TJ Rubicon, he let me borrow it for a weekend when he was out of town and I fell in love with it.

Before I bought my Jeep I had owned lifted 4x4s (a Z71 Silverado and a K2500 Suburban) but they were too big to take on any trails and didn’t have the fun factor of being able to remove the top and doors. When I sold my Suburban I bought a 1997 TJ Sport with the 4.0L and a 5 speed manual; and even though it wasn’t in the best shape cosmetically I loved it. Driving around with the doors and top off and waving to other Jeepers was great. I drove it throughout college but had to sell it when I graduated and had to start commuting to work.

I’ve had a few trucks since then, but have been itching to get back into a Jeep, and the creature comforts they’ve added over the years make it much better for a daily driver than my old TJ. Hoping to order a JLUR in the next month or so.

Here are a couple of pics of my TJ:

Why a Wrangler? It was the only vehicle that could take me to the landscapes I wanted to photograph. However, I soon discovered that the journey was as, if not more, fun than the destination.

Started off-roading in 2009 with a rental GMC Envoy that I took down to Colorado. It had 4L and a lockable rear axle, so it took me to a number of visually spectacular trails. However, I knew it couldn't do the one trail I needed to experience - Black Bear. So I hired 81 year old Bill and his 1971 touring Jeep and just the two of us spent an entire day on Black Bear and Imogene passes. Within 6 months I was a Rubicon owner and have been wheeling ever since.

I appreciate the compliment since I am by no means a pro. It's strictly a hobby.

It all started 15 years ago when I got my hands on a Quadratec magazine. As a pre-teen in the TJ era - the Wrangler TJ, YJ, and even CJ had established a plethora of aftermarket support, proving the need for companies like Quadratec. Little did i know at that time, how much that catalog would influence my life. It was a Jeep life immediately from there on out. I would go on to spend hundreds of hours over the years flipping through those silky gloss sheen pages, configuring different builds in my imagination. With a notebook and pen in hand, I would write down all of the parts and prices to view as a build sheet. I can still recall pages with the soft tops/bikinis/dusters burnt into memory.

Then Navy/Vietnam/wives/kids/college, kinda dampened my jeep (secret love)
in 1973 I started really hanging out with DODGE/CHRYSLER-

Yeah, it was--I had probably 6/8 440-6-pac engines and one 426 Hemi, but the RAMCHARGER WAS--the real off-road POWERHOUSE and in those days they had the removable top which was a real blessing in the SIERRAS--

In those days there wasn't a HINT of an ON-BOARD COMPUTER SYSTEM--

The good old days-
