Well, I don’t think I can trust this vehicle anymore. Took my 2.0L JLUR up to Brown Mountain, NC for the first time. Relatively easy trail. 4 LO and disconnected the sway bar and off we went. Everything was great. Took it nice and slow.

Then the following happened:
Battery Light
Loss the entertainment system
Random other systems started falling offline
A/C went
Pretty much every light came on
Vehicle stalled. Dead battery. WTF.

We were like 8 miles from anywhere. Fortunately, a side by side came along and gave us a jump. We took it out of 4 LO and limped back to the trailhead. Of course, everything came back once the battery was recharged. Drove home no other issues.

I took her to the dealer the next day and they read 40 or so low voltage codes. It seemed exactly to be the symptoms of alternator failure in other vehicles. Everything checked okay though, dealer could not duplicate.

My theory. At low rpms, especially while in 4 LO just taking your time, the system uses more juice than the BSG can generate to replenish. Took about half an hour before the vehicle died. Anyone one else experience this?

I’m heading back in a few days and I’m going to try to duplicate it. I’ve got a portable jump starter for back up.

Needless to say, until they can give me a definitive reason why it died, I’m not taking it anywhere where I could get stuck. Disappointing for a JLUR...

That right there is why I think the BSG is disappearing from all but the Sahara next year. Jeep should do a software update that automatically shuts off the ESS and disables the BSG below a certain voltage. I don' think that would be too difficult for them to do.

This is concerning. I recall reading somewhere that BSG & ESS were disabled in 4-Low.

The only time I have seen a low voltage battery issue so far was when spooling my winch, but that code went away after 1 normal drive cycle. The 12v battery never went dead on me either.

Yes mine has been in 4 low plenty with no issues. I had a battery issue once that was due to tazer + uconnect battery drain while parked(tazer has since patched that).

There is a voltage screen you might start monitoring. I checked it often in both running and not running to figure out what was going on with mine. Good luck!

ESS is disabled temporarily if the 48v is below certain voltage, at least it does on mine, my ESS won’t engage if I have been using it too much or if I remain in stop mode for too long (it will automatically turn on the engine to recharge itself).

Just did The Rubicon Trail. No issues. Also numerous Moab Trips with no issues. Might just be a bad part. You need to just try to duplicate it again but not so far out. Jeep cares might be able to help if the dealer can’t find it after a time or two.

I’ll say it again..
It already does that, it gives an “ESS not ready, battery charging” message. Also, ESS is automatically disabled in 4LO anyways.. The OP probably just had a faulty battery, it has nothing to do with the ESS system.

I've got at least 40+ hours of low speed trail crawling at various off-road parks in a 2.0 with etorque. You just had a dud, the only time I had a problem was when I was winching without stepping on the gas. Got warnings but had no issues driving and they all cleared. Had this happen on my JK too.

Yes, I learned about this shortly after that post. It doesn't preclude a problem or error with that system, though. If if failed to shut it off in 4 low, it could theoretically happen, although I think now that would be a very low probability. Thanks for the detailed info!

@JeepCares another buyer stranded in the woods. What’s the fix?

I had the same exact issue this past weekend on Gold Mountain, Big Bear CA. Its at the dealer. They say it threw 20+ codes and is trying to figure it out. They trying to figure it out right now as I right this. I can't believe I found somebody with the same exact scenerio.
