We will continue the blog. We plan on Eating and Beaching our way around Costa Rica and might expand into Panama and South America. I really appreciate you following along and not having the same American thoughts that a lot have had on this thread.
That would be awesome to hit S. America but you won't be driving there and the ferry that used to run between Colon and Cartagena no longer runs. You'll have to ship it on a cargo ship, unfortunately.

Costa Rica is a great place and this past year when I was there, I was thinking I would love to have my Jeep so I could explore the whole place. Your road trip is a dream of mine and now that you have paved the way and proven it can become reality maybe I can get wife on board. I'm following your blog and can't wait to read more about your adventures.

You can not imagine how jealous I am. I love Costa Rica. Every time I’ve been there wasn’t a Wrangler to be had to rent. But I’m not brave enough to make the drive. Be safe, have fun, and keep us informed.

Pura Vida!
CT I am jealous as well. I would absolutely love to tour all of North America. Which I will, to include Canada and Alaska. I want to tour Mexico, then all of Central America. Then venture and tour South America. The unknown is the dislike for Americans. I would hate to get into a situation where I was compromised and everything went to hell in a bucket. I hope I research well enough. Besides like is too short to not venture out of your comfort zone, taste life, and live a little.

Hey everyone! We made it! We are safe and sound in Costa Rica. Man this was a journey. We ended up driving 4100 miles in 13 days. We were in 7 different countries and crossed 6 borders. We averaged 21.9 mpg for the trip.

México was great! It was amazing seeing the different parts of the country and how different the landscapes were. Border crossings were a little crazy, the worst part of border crossings were poorly marked buildings and general not knowing where to go. I would say the worst city we were in was Acapulco. It was super busy and crazy and dirty. Not a place we would go again. If we were to do it again, the one thing we would change is to be able to spend more time in certain places. Puerto Escondido is one of these places. We had some really long days in the car, a couple due to protests in Guatemala & Honduras. Pretty much every night when we pulled into where we were staying we were exhausted. A little less driving and more enjoying and relaxing would have been much better but I could only take 2 weeks off at a time.

Drove past an awesome new Jeep dealership in Mexico and they had some nice new 4 door JLs out front. We did see quite a few CJs, TJs, YJs, & JKs on our way. In Guatemala we saw tons of old Toyota Landcruiser trucks and 4 doors. There is a Jeep dealer here in Costa Rica but it is in San Jose and I’m pretty sure they are still selling 2017s as new.

We were driving back to Tamarindo from looking at a rental house and on the Google Maps there was a road that said similar ETA and we looked at each other and said why not? Stupid noobs mistake. It was near dark and this road went from hard packed dirt to deep thick Mud. It had been raining like cats and dogs for over a week straight at this point. We should have turned around right away... Nope. Dumbasses keep on going. I quickly popped it in 4H and we were straight mudding. Let me tell you, this freaking Jeep is amazing! I kept the throttle going and we plowed through this crazy ass mud and made it out with no issues. Lessons learned. When the Google says similar ETA, it doesn’t know the condition of the road.

Thanks for hanging with us on this trip and thanks for reading the blog www.flipboltz.wordpress.com We will continue to post in the blog and I will continue to post here on the boards. Let me know when you want to come visit!

Over the years I’ve been just fine everywhere I’ve gone in North and South America. How you’re welcomed and treated has more to do with you and how you conduct yourself than where you’re from. Like you said, do the research about where you’re going, don’t be stupid or arrogant, respect people and their country, and you’ll be fine. Costa Rica tends to have extremely friendly and welcoming people as a whole (they drive like angry New Yorkers though), not just those who work in the tourism and service industry. Also learning the language on even a basic level helps because it shows people that you’re making the effort to connect with them on a personal level in their culture rather than expecting them to speak English to accommodate you because you’re American. Look up the expat community online in the country you’re considering visiting and get priceless advice from there.

Once Chivo is legal here, we will be traveling around the country seeing all we can.

We just got back from a 10 day trip to Costa Rica. Such an amazing place. We visited Tortuguero, Sarapiqui, and Arenal. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit the cloud forest or the Pacific coast. Hopefully we can go back and visit there later.

We saw a couple Jeeps while we were there but no JLs.

That looks like a killer trip! One of our first trips once we get the Jeep back is to the Caribbean side. I have seen quite a few Jeeps here as well but no JLs - Only mine.

We leave Monday for 6 days in the Tamarindo area. Wife has been on several girl trips but this will be my first time in CR.
