@1100 miles! Ok, I decided to get the first oil change completed. I had mild weather, for once, and since I plan to do all my own routine service and I want to run full synthetic, I just decided to get it done . First, a big shout out goes to @DanW for all his help. I decided to go with Mobile 1, "Extended Performance" I plan to do my own oil changes between 5/6k in the future. There's a lot of information out there, so do your own oil research. (let's not turn this thread into "what's the best oil" thread) . Anyway it's about as straight forward and easy as it gets. Having been raised doing my own oil changes, this one can be done in the amount of it would have taken me to pull the filter in some vehicles.

Steps:

#1 Set your drain pan
#2 Loosen the filter cap with 15/16ths socket. (top, front and center in engine bay)
#3 Drain oil in pan (don't miss) (1/2 socket first)
#4 Remove oil filter and pull apart from cap
#5 Remove old Ring withwstraight edgee Attatch new O Ring to cap and then press new filter into cap. (lightly run some oil on the new O ring before attaching to cap)
#6 After old drains, (5-10 minutes) , level ground is recommended.
#7 Clean pan with rag and replace oil drain nut w-1/2 "socket (do not over tighten quarter turn pass initial stop)
#8 Pull dipstick, and fill with 5 quarts!
#9 Wipe dipstick and check oil leverl (new oil is hard to see on the stick)
#10 I drove it, got it hot, and rechecked the oil level. 5 QUARTS IS IT!

Side notes: To get the $sale on the oil that was running I needed to buy 5 quarts with a filter ($32.99). They only had the Purolator filter. Cross referenced from Mopar # (see pics) Same filter as in the 2016 GCGC and up.

More notes: While driving on my "get it hot" drive I I checked the cluster display under Oil Life. It still showed 86‰. After getting home I turned vehicle off, re-checked the oil level.. then put the vehicle in run mode {2 button presses with for off brake} Pressed the gas pedal to the floor 3 times, then re-checked the cluster display. It read 100‰

Last notes: The original filter looked good after 1100 miles. The Purolator I had to get (only one they had) is rated @5k miles. So my next change may come a bit earlier than the planned 5/6k changes.

I checked the old oil with a magnet and didn't notice any metal shavings.

That filter pic is the old btw. And cold starts are quiet now, not one second of knock noticed.

@Ed ... Can you go to your JLU and try 13mm for oil drain plug and 24mm for oil filter cap. Unless the 2018 3.6L has changed, I think you will find the 13mm and 24mm is the way to fly.

don't you get 2 free oil changes per year with the "jeep wave" program?
Yes, But I've had some issues with dealers service departments. So I'm done. Not to mention, the cost savings (after freebies) is great.

I believe those are the correct metrics numbers you listed, I have a combo socket set that will do either or. I just chose to list the standard size, not the metric.

I hear ya! I had changed my front and rear diff fluid one time. Brought it in for one of my free oil changes and they said I needed new diff fluid and graciously told me what the charge would be. Told them to suck it...that I just changed it. They obviously didn't even check to see the fluid...they just went by the maint schedule.

Interesting...qt less oil than the JK(U)?

Same easy process obviously...
Yes, now calls for 5 quarts of oil, not 6.

The 2018 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 offering ... engine displacement and outputs remain unchanged from 2017 at 285 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 pound-feet (353 Nm) with RPM peaks for those outputs also staying the same (6,400 and 4,800 respectively).

Compression ratio, is 11.3:1 .

Now rated at 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined (13.8/10.2/12.4 l/100km) for the standard transmission and 18/23/20 mpg (13.1/10.2/11/8 l/100km) for the automatic transmission-equipped model.

**Above info edited at 6:20pm on 2/14/18, to correct error in compression ratio and where engine is manufactured.

It looks like there's a reset function in the oil life cluster screen by holding "ok" button. So not sure if my oil reading just reset itself after start and stop or the old gas pedal method worked. So, once I saw 100% I did not hit the "ok button on the steering wheel.

Great write up! Mopar filter looked like it should! I doubt there is a vehicle made with a petrol engine that has easier oil change access than the JL.

I'll be running the same oil on my next go around. First change will be on or about the 24th of February.

Yes, now calls for 5 quarts of oil !

Has a lower compression ratio, down to 10.2:1 from 11.3:1, and a resulting lower oil and coolant requirement (down 1 liter for oil, 3 liters for coolant), reducing weight.

Now rated at 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined (13.8/10.2/12.4 l/100km) for the standard transmission and 18/23/20 mpg (13.1/10.2/11/8 l/100km) for the automatic transmission-equipped model. This engine is now built in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico.
That makes buying it easier with the 5 quart jugs. I bought 6 not knowing. Extra is good..

That oil will flow FAST and it sounds like the anti drainback valve is good to go!

I tried a Mobil 1 filter on the first oil change in my JK and it had horrible dry start noise. The anti drainback valve function is crucial and easy to take for granted. The adbv in that Mobil 1 filter model of filter didn't like the mounting angle in the JK. It became a well known issue. I switched to Motorcraft FL400S and no more noise. I since switched to the Fram Ultra Guard and it does well, too.
