2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JL, 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sport JL
I purchased a new 2018 JLUR 6-speed manual and a new 2018 JLU Sport 6-speed manual on April 29, 2019. Both Jeeps stayed at the dealer until Saturday May 4 as the JLUR was getting 35" KO2 tires and Black Rhino rims put on and the Rubicon tires and rims were being transferred to the Sport. I never got the Sport tires and rims back from dealer as the "disappeared" but that is another story. Anyway, picked up the two Jeeps on May 4. The Rubicon is mine and the Sport is my son's. This is my 4th Jeep (5th if you count my the one I purchased and my son drives). I've had a 1996 2-door, a 2006 2-door, and a 2012 4-door, and now the 2018 JLUR and 2018 JLU Sport. Almost zero problems out of any of those previous three jeeps over a collective probably 200k miles. No problems so far with the 2018 JLU Sport.

The Rubicon is beautiful with the 35" tires and rims. I mean like amazing looking. Best looking Jeep, subjective I know, that I've owned. I sold a 2019 M2C that just wasn't practical for my family right now and got the Jeep. I was worried switching from the BMW M2C as I custom ordered it but the Jeep did the trick. Simply great... for two weeks.

On May 17, the 19th day of ownership and 14th day I had been driving the Jeep I was driving through a parking lot and all lights on the dash lit up and power steering went out. I have been driving manuals all my life but honestly though, "good job moron, you just stalled." I hit the button (ug) to start it again and it turned off. Confused I turned it back on and everything was good... for about 200 yards. Then all lights came on again, start/stop and all that and power steering was out. Knowing I didn't kill it I turned it off, waiting about five minutes and turned it back on. I made it a good 500 yards this time and same thing. Luckily I am two minutes from my dealer so I struggled into the dealer with all lights on the dash lit up and no power steering assistance. The service rep didn't check it in but said oh I've seen this before and reseated all fuses, cleared the codes, and sent me on my way. I made it the two miles back to my office and same thing happened so turned around and back to the dealer where my BRAND NEW JEEP WITH DRIVE OUT TAGS has been ever since! Did I mention BRAND NEW. Only filled up the tank once new! Drive out tags still on new! Haven't made a payment yet new!

I'm writing this on May 31 and will update as I get updates myself, but so far:

- It is firing 20+ error codes nearly simultaneously.
- They first were saying that Jeep was sending an engineer out to look at it but then they said that wasn't approved or something
- Said STAR had them order an ABS module (I jokingly said at the time are you sure that isn't the first error to fire because it starts with "A")
- Replaced ABS module and not surprisingly it didn't fix anything.
- Said STAR is having them run circuit overlays on all 20 something modules.
- Update today, May 31, is no progress, still working with STAR, and no new parts have been ordered.

The service guys and my sales guy at the dealer have been ok to work with considering. They did get me a Dodge RAM 1500 which I suppose is better than nothing but doesn't reduce the sting of having a $50k Jeep with drive out tags sitting unusable, especially in this beautiful top off weather. As I told them I didn't pay $50k to have a Dodge RAM (no offense to those who love the trucks).

I have to say I am truly terrified after visiting this forum to the point where I've already researched TN lemon law and getting names of attorneys in case it gets there. Not there yet but at this rate it feels like a waiting game unless Jeep sends some dedicated engineer to fix the thing. I love Jeeps. I want my Jeep back. That said, I love a reliable car way more. The 2006 Jeep I sold a few months ago with 120k miles was in the shop maybe a total of three days. This is insane!

TLDR
- 2018 JLUR purchased April 29, 2019, took possession May 4, 2019
- May 17, 2019 multiple error codes and sent to dealer

I'm completely with you on the frustration. As a 2018 JLU Sport owner, I had my radio, backup camera, all usb ports and aux power ports all die within 3000 miles. Not to mention, I had a windshield break from a very tiny stone, traveling 40mph at the time. This crack spread through 2/3 of my windshield within 2 days. This is not normal, I have owned cars for 100k plus miles and never had a broken windshield. I've had cars that had cracks and chips that never spread either. My console lock falls out when I use the key, the steering (I've owned 4 wranglers) is so loose and wondering that my wife feels it is unsafe to even drive it. Now, the new "feature" I am experiencing is that piece of crap transmission is shifting hard, staying in gears for too long (RPM is too high and needs to shift) and just feels overall clunky when accelerating. The quality and control of Jeep is severely lacking and it 100% shows. All of these issues and my car has 5k miles on it.

Now granted, I love wranglers, but I love getting what I paid for even more. You have worse issues than me and your sticker price is higher, but my JLU Sport still ended up being 40k. So when everyone chimes in with the same old "it's a jeep" bullshit, I am with you. I spent 40k on a brand new car that has a ton of issues that never should have surfaced before I drove off the lot. I've owned numerous cars in my life that did not have these issues or any issues the entire time I owned them. My wife bought a brand new Kia Sorento (30k) 3 months before I bought my Wrangler and it has never spent one day in the shop. Guess what? They built it properly with a radio that works, backup cam, good transmission and fuses that are actually seated (quality control?!). I'm beyond frustrated and so sick of all the excuses of "It's a Jeep" or "It's the first model year"

Hi Joshua,

Iā€™m a not so proud owner of a 2018.5 JL Rubicon unfortunately...ops, that should have read Unlimited!
Bought mine in December and since then put 12,400kms on it. It does have 12600, but the 200 km were put on by the dealership trying to get it to act up. Mine does not like water, causes the steering to cut out. Thing is, it picks the damnedest time to cut out. Once, the first time while going down in narrow mountain trail, the second time while in traffic and a third time while in traffic after having picked it up from the dealer. They have pulled connectors, checked grounds and flashed the system. Nothing has worked so far. Now they are waiting for their wash rack to get fixed so they can do a water test on it. I hope theyā€™ll be successful at fixing the wash rack, because they sure canā€™t seem to fix my Jeep.
Itā€™s sad because because all the places I have take my JL, I could have made it there and back with the 2014 Ford Escape I traded in to get this (according to Jeep) the worlds most capable off road SUV. Itā€™s what all baby SUVs want to grow up to be.

Here in Alberta Canada, I wish we had a Lemon Law, like you do in the States. We do have agencies that help us fight the car manufacturers. But it is a hassle and disappointment considering you forked out 60k for your childhood dream. May be it is time to look at contacting a lawyer.

The number of "Jeep apologists" here is beyond crazy...it's insane...it's like a cult! The plain facts are here for all to see and yet they rationalize and dismiss and pretend this is somehow normal. It's 2019 and the ONLY way you end up with a vehicle as poorly designed/engineered and manufactured as the Wrangler is complete incompetence and that should scare the crap out of every (would be) Jeep owner. I've owned Toyota, Subaru, Volvo, Honda, Acura, Audi, Ford, Mazda, Lexus and never experienced a major issue with any of these vehicles and only experienced very few very minor issues with a few. When I've had issues the dealerships were all quick and efficient at diagnosing and fixing the problem. The number of incompetent dealership service centers who can't diagnose and can't fix common problems is INSANE!

I've spent time on tons of auto forums and sure they all attract people who want a place to complain but the ratio of complaints to non-complaint posts here are orders of magnitude greater than any other forum I've read in the past 20 years. The problems with the Wrangler are real and wide spread and the result of incompetent engineering and manufacturing. Don't drink the Kool-aid! It's 2019 and just about every other manufacture has figured out how to make a reliable vehicle while this seems to be beyond Jeep's capabilities.

There is supposedly a ground point under the battery area that was common for being loose which would cause such error codes.

The dealership, is thinking that water is getting into wiring for right rear wheel speed sensor.... wait! I thought this thing could ford 30 inches of water? If my problems started by going through a puddle, and a car wash. What would have if I did take into deeper water?

Many of us have had random computer, display and other electrical problems and found 50% of the fuses, relays to be loose. Fixing it took 2 minutes by popping off the fuse box cover and pressing down on all fuses and relays (50% of them made the sound of connecting and 50% were already seated well). Problems gone. Did anyone check your fuse / relay box yet? The symptoms you are describing could be intermittent connections occurring in the fuse / relay box.

I should feel blessed after your post. I have a JLSU purchased 03/2018 and have had no issues, until yesterday. Driving at Highway speed my engine light came on and felt a shudder and loss of power. The auto/stop light came on and that feature doesn't work now.
The codes cleared, a slight rough idle but drivable. This morning, once I approached highway speed, the lights came on and same problems.
I called the dealership and was told, no openings until 06/21....really?
Love the Wrangler, but service sux.

The only thing I didn't check, but doubt that's the problem.... I'll try it.

Same thing happened to mine on Saturday, stop start kicked on at the stop sign and when I took my foot off the break the whole car turned off, called the wife to jump the Jeep and we did and it turned on and when I went to go home my power steering went out and all these lights on the dash lit up and got me nervous and than I got 100 feet from my house and it completely turned off on me and wouldnā€™t start with a jump, I had to get towed 100 FEET to my house where I tinkered with the Jeep until this past Monday I used the fluke meter and saw my main battery was dead and after ripping it apart for a little I got to the aux battery and that was dead as well, so I bought new batteries and threw them in and that still didnā€™t fix the problem, so I did more digging, so where the lug connections go on the fuse box one of the main fuses were blown ā€œlug #3ā€ was blown as it didnā€™t Beep with continuity on the fluke, changed that fuse and put everything back together and it cranked right back up.... at this point tho Iā€™m nervous to take it to work id rather drive it around town first to make sure itā€™s 100% fixed Iā€™ll upload the part number to the main bus bar fuse

Update:

JLUR Days Driven - 14
JLUR Days in Shop - 26

Just a quick update. Since my last post the dealership replaced the PCU but the Jeep is still doing the same thing. Said they are being told to drive the Jeep with a diagnostic monitor attached to get readings as soon as it happens. Luckily it doesn't take long for the dashboard to light up so hopefully my sub 1k mile Jeep doesn't get more miles put on it diagnosing the problem than I put on it driving.

I have opened a case with Jeep directly as well to see if it helps with anything. That was two days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. I will update if there is any progress but this is getting increasingly frustrating.

I went backpacking this past weekend and had to turn around a mile from the trailhead and circle an hour out of the way because the gravel road had a slight drop with a small creek crossing it. I was in my Accord with 120k miles on it thinking, man this is EXACTLY what I got the Jeep to do. I suppose I could have driven the loaner Dodge RAM but as this was out of town didn't want to chance something happening to it or the daily or total mileage limit I have on it being exceeded.

Jeep JLUR timeline
- Purchased April 29, 2019
- Took possession May 4, 2019 after 35" tires being put on my dealership
- Into shop May 17, 2019
- Fuses reseated
- ABS module replaced
- Circuit overlays to look for problem

- PCU replaced
- Dealership driving with diagnostics
- June 12, 2019.... still sitting at shop
That is disappointing. Mine had the engine light and then auto/stop light come on...can't get into the dealer for 2 weeks. Loss of power, slight rough idle but can still drive it. Love the Wrangler but this is not dependable.
Good luck with your Jeep.

Hi jmem,
We deeply regret to hear of your experience. Has a case been opened on the Customer Care aide to add additional assistance to this process? If not, please send our team a private message and we would be happy to get this process started for you.

Jeep Social Care Specialist,

Yes, I have a case started with Customer Care as of this week. Why I had to start it and if it will get the ball rolling is yet to be seen. In my opinion, there really should be some automatic escalation, say if the Jeep is in the shop 14 days, it gets escalated to corporate and THEY call the customer to apologize, check in, and give a status update. Anyway, I did open a case this week.

As of today there is a request in, but no confirmation, to get a field tech to go look at the Jeep. We'll see.
