Feature Request Thread: MK2 ROAM JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper - prototype factoring

Hi everyone!

We're in the process of finalizing our MK2 JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper feature list! What would everyone like to see as an available addon to our MK2 JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper? We'd love to hear from you, but there is no guarantee that a feature will be doable or will be delivered.

The rear bumper and swingarm of the MK2 ROAM JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper looks similar/identical to the MK1 ROAM JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper:

Pictured below is the proposed MK2 ROAM JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper with all of the currently planned addons (in addition to the standard features in our MK1 JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper).

The MK2 ROAM JL Slimline Rear Bumper will build upon the MK1 and differs primarily by including three accessory mount subsystems: the ladder/2nd swingarm, the air diverter/spoiler system, and the modular lattice system. Each of the accessory mount systems can be installed separately or altogether as a system. All accessories or addons weighing 100 lbs or more will mount to the ladder/2nd swingarm system, anything with a large cross section will be mounted to our air diverter and everything else will be mounted to the modular lattice subsystem (all accessory addons will open with the main swingarm, and will be able to be operated with one hand similar to the production spec MK1 ROAM JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper):


01. 1UP or Kuat bike carrier addon mounted on a second swingarm (moves in sync with the primary tire carrier swingarm) (1UP bike carrier pictured).

02. High mounted air diverter/spoiler (in testing now, designed to divert airflow to reduce whistling and other NVH when the bike carrier and cargo baskets are loaded).

03. JL rear bumper mounted (JL frame mounted) ladder, supports >600 lbs.

04. External fuel canister mounts. Rotopax or Jerrycan or West Marine/Scepter Marine.

05. High mounted cargo basket/carrier.

06. MaxTrax MKII or ARB Tred Pro mounts.

07. High mounted camera relocation mount (meant for when you've got a bike or few mounted on the attached bike rack).

08. High mounted center brake light relocation mount (meant for when you've got a bike or few mounted on the attached bike rack).

09. Stealth CB Antenna Mount - built into the airfoil/spoiler system.


Not pictured but planned:

10. 360 Camera periscope (extendible).

11. Cargo basket light bar mount.

12. Compressor system mount with external air tank (in testing now, will be waterproof and will resist rain and snow).

13. Common rail 12V port (20A) with lock.

14. Keyed 12V supply (100A, winch capable).

15. Winch mount (rear facing).

16. High lift jack mount.

17. Captured GoPro/3rd party camera mounting system (theft resistant GoPro/external camera mounts)

18. Snowboard/Ski Rack mount.

Accepted ideas or proposals so far:

We invite everyone to participate:

The first person to come up with an original idea and a reasonable enough proposal (accepted by our engineering team) of how to integrate an addon or feature to the MK2 rear bumper (when accepted) will receive 20 percent off of the purchase cost of an MK2 JL Slimline rear bumper or another ROAM front or rear bumper (pending availability). This applies to any accepted proposals for accessory mount ideas. Requests to change the bumper skin itself do not count - this thread is meant for bumper addons only.

Please note that the feature addons can be sheetmetal, CNC'd or plastic injection molded; changes to the material of the bumper itself also do not count towards the original ideas qualification. To clarify, we already have stainless steel, aluminum, chromoly, and titanium (not available in certain bumper series) as available options for our front and rear bumpers, and saying you want a titanium bumper will not count as an original idea.

With the rear tire blocked, would there be any means create a secure way of latching a trasharoo or like waste product to the side? Maybe move the Maxtrax to the right and add the trasharoo to the left (as an option).

Also, expanding on onboard air, adding external facing quick connect to the bumper itself so the air compressor and/or storage tank can be mounted inconspicuously. Quick way to fill up Bike and Jeep Tires.

Also also, slots to securely lock bike to.

How about a low-profile, rear mini-skid-plate?

It could mount to some/all of the 3 hitches for when they are not in use...

Something that is *slightly* pitched upward fore & aft, and flat on the bottom, to prevent getting hung up on it.

You wouldn’t have to give up but 1/4” of clearance to make it happen.

I’ve already bought your front bumper, and this add-on would put me over the top for the rear, as well.

I would love to see a removable skid plate so I don't run the risk of my tire hanging on obstacles offroad. I've seen the hitch mounted "stingers", but something specific to this bumper would be cool

Hi!

The Maxtrax or Tred Pro recovery boards can't be moved to the passenger side because when either swingarm is opened anything on the passenger side will interfere with the taillight or body (please see the part cut out of the ladder side profile for reference). We've located the 3rd accessory group, the modular lattice system, on the drivers side because of the interference problem.

There should be enough room however though to attach a trasharoo to the outside of the maxtrax boards at an angle. The modular lattice system as it sits right now should have enough room and attachment points to securely attach something like a trasharoo. Also, the 2nd swingarm doesn't have to have a bike carrier mounted on it at all times and when a foldable bike carrier such as a 1UP or similar is folded up to the "retracted" position, a trasharoo could potentially still be mounted to the spare tire. Our design focuses on and prioritizes the bike carrier because a decent bike or two will probably cost more than the entire bumper assembly itself twice over.

Thats a great idea! How high would you want the air hose reel to sit? E.g. Lower for better access to tires or bike tires or higher up so its more out of the way of things? If its located near or at the cargo basket, there could potentially be enough room to located a retractable air hose reel.

Thats a great idea! To clarify, you're requesting a standalone skid plate for the bottom of the rear bumper and/or hitch area right? If so, just as a mockup, would something like this fit the bill?

Also, we do have something in the works that will probably also include the functionality that you're describing, though its part of a larger skid system and is meant to primarily protect both our aux fuel system and parts of the exhaust while diverting air/water/debris under the chassis.

Concept: Modular extended over-spare cargo rack into Jeep “bed”.

Three options using same rack with different brackets:
1. Extension to spare rack in topless mode or modifications with slant back soft top.
2. Optional mount inside soft or hard tops
3. Optional mounts on top of hard top

This could be tied (quick release) into the existing rack or as an alternate rack entirely separate mounted to roll bar with adjustable height and size options when tops are on or off. Could be a literal extension with removable gates so you have a continuous larger spare rack. Ideal for use when the top is off but maybe use with slant back tops or lowers under full soft top.

The main idea is to maximize precious "unused" area while stabilizing and strengthening both racks - also since it is far lower than a roof mounted cargo rack. Options include being part of a topless full roof rack system, optional mounts to hardtop with several sizes and potential options.

In any case I'm looking forward to this modular bumper/spare carrier - hopefully the spare is adjustable and the camera is a solid and clean or quick release mount like some others. Modular innovation is key so I support your efforts!

This is definitely a great idea! I've forwarded this already to our engineering dept and they're currently discussing how to implement this: the current best guess so far is to make the cargo basket slideable (towards the front of the vehicle) and lockable and then to attach the secondary cargo basket to the outside (towards the rear of the vehicle) of the main slideable cargo basket, so that in the case that the soft top needs to go on (e.g. freak snow storm or similar) then with both baskets attached the vehicle can still "limp home" (with both baskets still attached) as opposed to requiring disassembly before its mobile. The weight of the basket or even an additional basket won't be a problem because of the modular lattice system attachment points (on a FEA program it looks like ~400 lbs should be fine so lets call it 200 before we actually test one out in real life?).

Hi rustyshakelford!

In the rendering, what looks like a rod that sticks out from the bottom of the main hinge pin is actually not there and is just a position indicator to show where the axis for the swingarm is located left over from rendering the tire carrier. The very bottom of the blue part of the ladder / 2nd swingarm mount incorporates a really small skid plate already that curves forward over the bottom of the hinge; the hinge location also closely hugs the body - please see the attached rendering of the mini skid mockup for the hinge location relative to the body and the pictures at the very top of the thread for what the actual hinge looks like (MK1 JL Slimline Tire Carrier Rear Bumper pictured).

We can probably do a version with zero hitches, though the three hitches are actually structural and are there to not only allow hitch mounted accessories to be installed without taking up the main hitch but are also part of the main structure to spread the force of a rearward impact across a few more load paths. We'll also probably do a budget/economy version that does not include the tire carrier as well.

Wait, just to clarify, you mean to end up with a total of one hitch receiver right (or to remove just the two adjacent to the main hitch receiver right)? The current MK2 prototype factoring has four (4) total hitch receivers - the last one is actually part of the second swingarm and is covered by the bike carrier / ski carrier addon: its actually visible in the very first rendering on the first post of the thread. The swingarm mounted hitch point isn't meant to be a tow point but instead to allow some kind of a hitch mounted accessory to be installed (for example a bike carrier that we've never seen before) and still articulate with the rear tailgate, instead of requiring the accessory itself to incorporate a folding or swingout function of some sort.

How strong would the box need to be (just theft deterrent and/or power tool proof?)? Also can this be incorporated into something else instead of the rear bumper? For example, a concealed door on either the rear part of our JL Rock Rails or on a front bumper instead? We've been testing a version of this for some time already and without making the box a complete Faraday Cage the passive entry feature will still trigger sometimes, and seems to be more sensitive towards the rear of the vehicle as opposed to the front.

Ah, ok, perfect. With a 2door I am big on maximizing available space without having to pull along a teardrop or other trailer. Solo adventures would likely include a bike.

I think the the second option might be better to help (as best as possible) get the air nozzles clean, but my only hesitation with the retractable option is how well would that work for those that have an adapter to split lines to all for tires. If there was a nozzles built into the base of the bumper then users could mount the compressor in the interior of the vehicles and run a hose to the quick connect nozzle or tank (which could be mounted above).

Simple solution would be adding some like a slot to run a cable or ulock (or both) through. Another option, would be somehow adding a retractable or fixe horizontal post that could clamp the seat post and be used for trail side repairs on the bike (independent of the 1UP/RockyMounts/Kuat/etc), maybe that can also somehow be utilized to secure the bike.

Yes, I’m talking about a standalone unit. Your mock-up is pretty close, I think. You’ll want to make sure the leading edge isn’t turning it into a dirt & snow scoop, which is why I suggested angling it slightly upward in the front.

For my purposes, a full turtle-belly worth of skids isn’t necessary or desired. I just want to protect certain components, and prevent getting hung up on logs and such.

I hadn’t considered the skid being extended to protect the rear tire, but I kind of like it because it could double-function as a tailgate step and allow easier access to a roof rack. Good work!
