Installed Mopar Rubicon Steel Bumper on a Sahara. Here's what we learned

How'd the install go? I just purchased a Moab takeoff steel bumper and plan to install to my Sahara. Were the Maximus 3 brackets needed for the fog lights?

So the install went pretty well. Had to make a few trips to the Lowe's and the local dealer to get all the parts I was missing. The bumper I purchased included the skid plate and most of the bolts needed.

From this guide the parts I needed were:
* Right skid plate bracket 68353836AA. Part B or C on the PDF
* Left skid plate bracket 68353837AA. Part B or C on the PDF.
* Rivnuts (4) 6511076AA. Part E on the PDF
* Bolts for rivnuts (4) 6104414AA. Part D

Additional parts I already had:
* Skid plate 68293984AB. Part A on the PDF
* Screws secure skid to bumper (7). Part F on the PDF

Parts needed to secure the Maximus-3 bracket to the steel bumper:
* 2 5/16"-18 U-Type Extended U-Nut (Similar to this https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-2-Count-1-4-in-Black-Phosphate-Standard-SAE-Regular-U-Nuts/3013186) (See picture for specific part)
* 2 5/16"-18x1 Body Bolt (Similar to this https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-5-16-in-Black-Phosphate-Coarse-Thread-Body-Bolt/3012752) (See picture for specific part)

These bolts and u-nuts worked perfectly! Highly recommend securing the bracket to the bumper with bolts and u-nuts.

These videos were helpful to get the gist of what was expected in the install:



Unfortunately these videos did not involve relocating the factory LED fog lights to the steel bumper. That was the big unknown for me going into this project. And it took the most time. You have to completely disassemble the plastic bumper to get the wiring out. Once the wiring is out it wasn't really clear how that wiring should be ran in the steel bumper. I ended up using some of the plastic plug clips to secure them to the inside of the bumper. Wiring may be a little loose in there but haven't had any problems...

I'll post a bunch of the pictures I took during the install. Hopefully they are clear of what's what but let me know if something doesn't make sense. Pictures also show the plastic bumper disassembled so you get an idea of what to expect.

Thanks! I’ve been meaning to do a write up for the forum. This seemed like as good a place as any.

Now I’m kicking around the idea of getting replacing the silver grill inserts with the dark grey ones from a Rubicon. I like the silver inserts with the stock bumper (also has silver) but the dark grey ones might look a little better...

If you have a rubicon and you have the LED factory upgraded fogs and you’re looking to upgrade into the steel factory bumper, YOU DO NEED a fog light bracket. Maximus 3

Awesome. Thanks. I feel like the aftermarket vendors are wrong with what they told me. Its the same Mopar part number. I might try to order though the local dealer (if I can get the same price) so I can have some recourse if they're not installed for some reason.

So what’s the verdict on the LED lights? Currently have a Rubicon with LED fogs. Ordered the Complete STEEL bumper from dealer.....just need to know if I need anything else since dealer and parts have no idea!

So I took all the plastic components (skid plate, corner gap fillers on bumper) and almost ready to pull the plastic bumper off. I have all the parts and brackets to install the steel bumper but I’m concerned about reinstalling the halogen fog light housing in the steel bumper. Will the fog light housing from the plastic bumper bolt right into the steel bumper? I saw you mention the Maximus-3 bracket. That looks like it’s used to mount the fog lights to the top of the bumper (which I don’t want to do!) HELP! :/

David. I installed a steel bumper(no lights) on my sport s. I took the halogen light assembly and wiring from the plastic sport s and installed it into The bumper. I do not have the pictures on my phone but I purchased a jk fog light bracket from the 10th anniversary steel bumper( mopar part 68231956aa and 68231957aa) the light assembly pops in to that bracket and it bolts directly into the steel bumper. It’s a factory fit

Yes that’s it , moab bumper is the same. You will squeeze the 3 pegs on the back of your old bumper bracket and pull the glass assembly out , then pop it into that new bracket and bolt it up. It’s simple
